DeMartino sealed the deal with a one-yard run with\u00a04:14 left in the contest to put the Aggies up 21-7.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->***Utah State scored first on\u00a0a\u00a031 yard field goal by Nick Diaz in the first quarter\u00a0and increased the lead to 6-0 on a 39 yard boot by Diaz early in the second.<\/p>\n<p>***Northern Illinois finally\u00a0got on the board with 8:17 left in the half when Jordan Lynch scored on a one-yard keeper to cap a 15-play, 78-yard drive to take a 7-6 lead.<\/p>\n<p>***The Aggies took the lead for good on a five-yard pass from Darrell Garretson to Branbon Swindall early in the third quarter.\u00a0They used seven plays to go 31 yards after a Lynch interception.<\/p>\n<p>***DeMartino&#8217;s 58 yard run in the first quarter set a Poinsettia Bowl record for longest rush from scrimmage.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_36847\" style=\"width: 478px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/midvalleysports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/011.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36847\" class=\" wp-image-36847 \" alt=\"It was a tough night for Heisman finalist Jordan Lunch\" src=\"http:\/\/midvalleysports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/011-626x768.jpg\" width=\"468\" height=\"573\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-36847\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">It was a tough night for Heisman finalist Jordan Lunch<\/p><\/div>\n<p>***Garretson was\u00a0picked off in the end zone late in the third quarter but Northern Illinois was unable to take advantage.<\/p>\n<p>***The Huskies intercepted Garretson again early in the fourth but Matthew Sims missed a 29-yard field goal.<\/p>\n<p>***After DeMartino&#8217;s one-yard run Garretson found Bruce Natson for a two point conversion\u00a0for a 21-7 lead.<\/p>\n<p>***Northern Illinois\u00a0scored with 1:44 left on a\u00a015-yard pass from Lynch to\u00a0Juwa Brescacin to cut the lead to 21-14 but they failed to recover the ensuing onside kick and the Aggies ran out the clock.<\/p>\n<p>***Only 23, 408 fans were in attendance.<\/p>\n<p>***Garretson finished\u00a017-28 for 121 yards and a touchdown\u00a0and the two interceptions.<\/p>\n<p>***Lynch ran for\u00a039 yards and a touchdown and threw for\u00a0216 yards and a score\u00a0and one pick.<\/p>\n<p>***Northern Illinois had 315 total yards compared to 289 for Utah State.<\/p>\n<p>***Northern Illinois dropped to 12-2 on the year losing its last two games.\u00a0Utah State finished at 9-5.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(San Diego) &#8211; Joey DeMartino rushed for 143 yards and a touchdown to lead Utah State to a 21-14 win over Northern Illinois Thursday night in the Poinsettia Bowl at Qualcomm Stadium.
