(Whittier)- The LA KISS held open tryouts Sunday at Whittier\u00a0College.\u00a0Over 75 players showed up in all\u00a0from California and\u00a0other places. The Players participated in various drills including the 40 yard dash, shuttle drills, linemen competition and passing and receiving skills.<\/p>\n

Only a select few were asked back for a second look including Crescenta Valley lineman Sam Campell who impressed\u00a0the KISS coaches enough that he will report Tuesday at 8:00 am to put on the helmet and pads in practice.\u00a0Campbell\u00a0an offensive lineman, graduated from CV in 2011.<\/p>\n

There were\u00a0were some other local players pariticpating as well including former Monrovia quarterback Nick Bueno,\u00a0who was lining up at receiver, Northview quarterback Oscar Robles, and\u00a0Schurr wide receiver\u00a0Chris Chairamonte.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a a great experience. I wish I could have impressed the coaches a little more but it was good to just get out here and participate. I’ll just keep working,\u201d Chairamonte said.<\/p>\n

Bueno who led Monrovia to two Mid-Valley Division titles was moved to receiver while playing at Cal Lutheran. Bueno was impressive making several receptions while fighting off defensive backs.<\/p>\n

The KISS has lost seven straight games while seeing their record drop to 2-8. Right now they are just looking for players that can help them win games.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s not something that is normally done but because of our record and that we have a bye week why not have open tryouts?\u201d said KISS head coach Bob McMillen. \u201cWe found A.J. Cruz at a tryout and look how successful he’s been. I went to four open tryouts before I made my first Arena Football League team. This wasn’t just for fun. We are looking for guys to help us win games and we did see some talent out here today. Even at 2-8 we have a chance to make the playoffs because other teams in the conference are struggling too.\u201d<\/p>\n

Keegan Whipkey was the fastest man at the tryouts. Whipkey, who played at Glendale JC in Glendale, Arizona ran a 4.33 40. Whipkey was asked back for a second look and figures to compete for a skill position. Ed Burns, another speedster, ran a 4.39.<\/p>\n

Cruz was on hand as assisting the coaches run players through drills.<\/p>\n

The KISS will resume play next week when they travel to San Jose to take on the Sabercats.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
