That\u2019s not a typical season for Cal who is traditionally in the playoffs and in the hunt for the Del Rio League title year in and year out.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Then long time coach Jim Arnold stepped down and the Condors suddenly had to not only find a way back to the post season but also do it with a brand new coach. A lot of people were thinking \u2018who is this guy\/\u2019. I even got a text message saying \u2018congratulations on being the fifth choice.\u2019 But that doesn\u2019t bother me at all. I like the challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trudell has been at Sonora for the last eight years as an assistant and this is his first head coaching position.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_40014\" style=\"width: 530px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/midvalleysports.com\/?attachment_id=40014\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-40014\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40014\" class=\"size-large wp-image-40014\" src=\"http:\/\/midvalleysports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/CAL-FTBLL-7-14-14-007-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Running the double wing \" width=\"520\" height=\"390\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-40014\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Running the double wing<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not a guy that moves around a lot. I\u2019ve been at Sonora for the last eight years. But another coach told me to apply so I decided to,\u201d Trudell said. \u201cI really didn\u2019t expect them to hire a 30 year old guy that was a lifetime assistant. But I\u2019m glad they did. I like the program and I like our team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trudell is joining a league that features the Southeast Division Champion in La Serna and two other schools- Santa Fe and El Rancho that Cal failed to beat last year. That will have to change in 2014 if the Condors are to return to the post season.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_40015\" style=\"width: 530px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/midvalleysports.com\/?attachment_id=40015\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-40015\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40015\" class=\"size-large wp-image-40015\" src=\"http:\/\/midvalleysports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/CAL-FTBLL-7-14-14-018-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"The Linemen getting in some work \" width=\"520\" height=\"390\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-40015\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Linemen getting in some work<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI know how good La Serna is. They do things the right way and they have a great program. That\u2019s where we aspire to be,\u201d said Trudell.\u201d And Santa Fe and El Rancho are solid too. Whittier has a good team as well. I don\u2019t much about Pioneer but I know they can compete too. This is a really tough league. But I like our program. We have good numbers, and we\u2019re working hard every day five days a week. And we\u2019ve built a solid coaching staff of nine.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_40016\" style=\"width: 530px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/midvalleysports.com\/?attachment_id=40016\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-40016\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40016\" class=\"size-large wp-image-40016\" src=\"http:\/\/midvalleysports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/CAL-FTBLL-7-14-14-023-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"OL\/DL Brendan Simpson \" width=\"520\" height=\"390\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-40016\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">OL\/DL Brendan Simpson<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Line coach Patrick Winchell was a coach on La Serna\u2019s CIF winning title team last year and DC Louie Zamora has coached at Arroyo and Los Altos.<\/p>\n<p>Trudell plans on bringing a no huddle, hurry up offense with a double wing, spread option. \u201cI think we have the personnel to do it. Who knows? I may scrap it week three but for right now that\u2019s what we\u2019re going with,\u201d Trudell said.<\/p>\n<p>Defensively the Condors will line up a standard 4-3 under Zamora. \u201cI think we\u2019ll be fine because our front seven guys are all returning. Satti, a southpaw, started for Cal last year and is ready to lead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis dad is a coach so he knows the game. He has no problem picking up the plays and how to run them,\u201d Trudell said.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan Lowden and Nathan Gudino will be the guys carrying the rock while Richard Salinas and James Contreras will also see time. He\u2019s 6-5 and a really great athlete,\u201d Trudell said.<\/p>\n<p>The line features Zach McHale, David Burrell, Jacob Olivas along with Andrew Salcido, Dominic Sanchez and Brendan Simpson. Roberto Salazar and Jorge Luna will line up at tight end.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSalcido has been exceptional this summer. I\u2019m really excited for the opportunity,\u201d Trudell added.<\/p>\n<p>And whatever happened to Arnold?
