Adding to what is becoming a Mike Tyson-esque aura, Golovkin knocked out Australia’s Daniel Geale in the third round Saturday night at Madison Square Garden.

Golovkin stated post fight with Max Kellerman that he used the first round to feel out his opponent, figure his tactics, and quote, “use the second and third round to show you.” And every single fight he is showing the American public that he is must see TV and showing up his competition.

When going over the knockout, Kellerman described “you exchanged right hands but he is the one that went down, he hit you cleanly,” to which Golovkin responded “this is my style like Mexican style, this is fight, this is not game. I love fight.”

Kellerman asked Golovkin to clarify. “You mean aggressive and action seeking? Golovkin then responded “Absolutely and every time.” When asked who he would want to fight next Golovkin responded, “You need amazing show just call me, I stay here waiting for everybody.”

Golovkin added that he desires unification of the 160 lb. middleweight division, which would include a fight with Miguel Cotto. Golovkin seems to understand that the most effective way he will be able to build his fan base and sell tickets is not through his words but his actions. One quote comes to mind when thinking of Golovkin’s state of mind, in the 2000 film the Gladiator, when asked what he wanted from Proximo, Maximus responded, “You ask me what I want. I too, want to stand before the Emperor as you did.” Proximo stated “I wasn’t the best because I killed quickly. I was the best because the crowd loved me” To which Maximus responded, “I will win the crowd. I will give them something they have never seen before.”

Although what Golovkin is doing has been seen before, he is definitely wining the crowd and doing his best to try and show us something we have never seen before. In this era of boxing when fighters are more concerned about protecting their records, Golovkin seems to be going into every fight with one question on his mind, “Are you not entertained?”

In an uneventful heavyweight fight that did little to elevate the status of both fighters, American Bryant Jennings won a split decision over Mike Perez. Both fighters have a counter-punching style, and in boxing sometime you need a good dance partner to make good show, which this fight clearly was not. The fight was close; no complaints about the decision, which could have went either way. The only thing unanimous is no one will be calling for a rematch, and Wladimir Klitschko’s reign seems indefinite at this point.

By Joseph Rodriguez In what was supposed to be Gennady Golovkin’s toughest test to date, this was not.
