Vaughns added four carries for 47 yards on offense.

“He’s just a great football player- playing on both sides of the ball. He has a great football sense,” Bogan said. “He reminds me of Leroy Keyes, the former Heisman trophy candidate.” Keyes was a two way player for Purdue from 1966-1968 who finished third in the Heisman balloting in 1967 and second in 1968.

The Huskies went 80 yards on nine plays on the opening drive. Jacob Shirley capped it with a nine yard run for a 7-0 lead.

Vaughns did his Keyes impression on the next series when he picked off Walnut quarterback Austin Cooper and returned the ball to Mustang 40. On the next play, Shirley hit Ify Umodu in stride at the five and he danced into the end zone for a 60 yard score for a two touchdown lead.

Another Vaughns pick on the following series set up South Hills again. From the Walnut 30, the Huskies needed just four plays to score. Umodu was again on the receiving end of a Shirley 12 yard touchdown pass.

“I think the opening drive set the tone and then the interceptions solidified it,” Bogan said.

Jamel Hart joined the scoring party late in the half. He went right up the gut of the Walnut defense for a 32 yard touchdown run. Once he broke the line of scrimmage, there was nothing but daylight in front of him.

Hart finished the game with eight carries for 95 yards and a pair of scores. Shirley, who did the bulk of his damage in the first half, completed 10 of 13 for 118 yards and two touchdowns.

Vince Hernandez intercepted Cooper for a third time early in the third to set up a two yard run by Vaughns. Hart added a 23 yard score later to put out the lights at 41-0.

Bogan cleared his bench and the Mustangs came to life. Leonard Rhodes scored on a nine yard run to finally get Walnut on the board late in the third quarter. After another eight yard scoring jaunt by Rhodes two fumbles by South Hills led to two more scores.

Milan King retuned a loose ball 11 yards and Camron Woods halted a long South Hills drive by not only scooping up a South Hills fumble at the Walnut four, but returning it 96 yards for a touchdown with 2:21 left in the contest.

Issac Ramirez retuned a Walnut onside kick 52 yards for the final score.

“The kids played a great game. It was an opportunity for us to get some of the kids playing time,” Bogan added.

Cooper completed eight of 18 for 190 yards but was hurt by the three interceptions. Rhodes was the leading Mustang ball carrier with 65 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries.

South Hills improved to 3-0 in the San Antonio, (7-2 overall), and will try to finish it off next week at Rowland. Walnut dropped to 1-3 in league and 6-3 overall.

W 0 0 6 21 27

SH 14 13 14 7 48

Summary:

1st Qtr:

SH 8:00 Shirley 9 yd run (Austin Daugherty Kick)

SH 5:54 Umodu 60 yd pass from Shirley (Daugherty Kick)

2nd Qtr:

SH 11:05 Umodu 12 yd pass from Shirley (Daugherty Kick)

SH 1:09 Hart 32 yard run (Kick Blocked)

3rd Qtr:

SH 11:41 Vaughns 2 yd run (Daugherty Kick)

SH 8:42 Hart 23 yd run (Daugherty Kick)

W 2:39 Rhodes 9 yd run (Kick Failed)

4th Qtr:

W 8:03 Rhodes 8 yd run (Jose Mendoza Kick)

W 7:17 King 11 yd Fum.
