Here’s the game story from September 25.

Wildcats’ Win is a Rush, 36-17

By Tim Peterson

(Monrovia) – It definitely wasn’t a balanced attack. Monrovia only threw the ball three times for four yards. But when you run for over 300 yards it’s not necessary to pass and that’s exactly what the Wildcats in a 36-17 win over San Dimas Friday night.

Quarterback Nick Bueno ran for 109 yards and two touchdowns on just six carries. His touchdown runs consisted of 33 and two yards in the second quarter. De’shawn Ramirez carried the ball 11 times for 152 yards including a 62 TD yard run in the third quarter. Justin De La Nuez added 50 yards on six carries.

“We didn’t need to pass,” Bueno said. “So we just stuck with the run.”

Indeed they did. You got the idea it was going to be a long night for San Dimas when Monrovia needed just four plays to score on its first possession. On second down Ramirez ran for 25, and Bueno followed with a 27 yard sprint. Derrick Johnson then bolted into the end zone from 13 yards out. 50 seconds into the game and it was 6-0 Cats.

San Dimas responded with a drive that was the polar opposite. The Saints pieced together a 75 yard, 16 play drive that took 7:05 off the clock but stalled at the Monrovia 12. Dillon Corona booted a 30 yard field goal to cut it to 6-3.

On the next possession the Cats drove 75 yards on nine plays that Johnson finished with a one yard run. The drive was highlighted by a 27 yard jaunt by Bueno.

Dujawn Jones intercepted San Dimas quarterback Shawn Kennedy on the Saints next drive and returned it to the Monrovia 45. Four plays later Bueno busted loose again- this time for a 33 yard touchdown run and a 20-3 Wildcat lead.

Derrin Jenkins recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff and Monrovia had the ball at the San Dimas 37. Ramirez broke off a 34 yard run down to the Saint six and from there Bueno scored on a two yard run. In a four minute span the Wildcats had opened up a 27-3 lead with 4:40 left in the second quarter.

However Bueno fumbled on the next series and San Dimas took advantage. Tyler Sissons fell on the loose ball at the Monrovia 30 Theo Darlington scored from three yards out three plays later and it was 27-10 at the break.

Monrovia silenced any hopes San Dimas may have had when Ramirez raced 62 yards on the first play of the third quarter to put Monrovia up 34-10.

After Monrovia got a safety late in the third, Tre Evans threw a half back pass to Kevin Kolbeck for San Dimas with just over a minute left to round out the scoring.

“That’s what we were looking to do was establish the line of scrimmage,” said Monrovia Coach Ryan Maddox. “We have some talented backs that are hard to stop.”

Corona was the Saints leading rusher with 72 yards on eight carries but it wasn’t nearly enough to overcome the Wildcat attack.

“They ran the ball. They played physical inside. They just played football well. They really did,” said Saint Coach Bill Zernickow.

Monrovia improved to 4-0 while the Saints dropped to 3-1.

SD 3 7 0 7 17

M 6 21 9 0 36

Summary:

1st Qtr:

M 11:10 Johnson 13 yd run (Kick Failed)

SD 4:05 Corona 30 yd FG

2nd Qtr:

M 11:56 Johnson 1 yd run (Blanco Kick)

M 8:26 Bueno 33 yd run (Blanco Kick)

M 4:43 Bueno 2 yd run (Blanco Kick)

SD :27 Darlington 3 yd run (Corona Kick)

3rd Qtr:

M 10:27 Ramirez 62 yd run (Blanco Kick)

M 6:01 Haggard tackles Kennedy in endzone – Safety

4th Qtr:

SD 1:11 Kolbeck 14 yd pass from Evans (Corona Kick)

With Monrovia and San Dimas meeting this Saturday night in a rematch for the Mid-Valley Division Championship at Citrus College, we wanted you to get a look at what happened the first time they played.
