Back in 2010 we held an NFL Draft. The idea being the MVS staff and fans would adopt NFL teams and draft our coverage area players to fit the needs of their NFL franchise. We did it for two years and it was a lot of fun (but a lot of work).

Note: See the first ten players taken in that 2010 Draft at the bottom of this column.

***
With the first pick of the 2015 Draft the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select: Bryan Gadsby, quarterback, Crescenta Valley.

***
We’d like to thank everyone from Temple City for clicking on and driving up our analytics this week.

We never really got to know Coach Rob Castaneda so we cannot say whether he was a good guy or a bad guy. One of our staffers was introduced to him last summer at a passing tournament and he gave our guy the brush. So we never pushed the issue. In fact we went the other way to do defend what was taking place at Temple City last season.

I loved Mike McFarland. Good man, good coach, but in four years it never really came together for him at TC. Under Castaneda the Rams showed life for the first time since 2009. It was kind of exciting and I argued in a column that Castaneda needed to be given time.

The salad days are long gone for Temple City football. As one commenter posted the real competition is between the Rams, South Pasadena, and La Canada (Don’t go to sleep on the Spartans). They are five years away from competing with San Marino and Monrovia and that’s if they get a great coach.

Lombardi himself couldn’t get this team to the Central Division semifinals. And last I checked Lombardi is not knocking at the door begging to be let in. Of course, yes, Lombardi is no longer with us, but Bill Belichick isn’t knocking either.

***
With the second pick of the 2015 Draft the Tennessee Titans select: Jeremiah Martin, quarterback, St. Francis.

***
Temple City Continued: So now the push, by the public at least, is to hire Riley Saxon. He played, he won, he’s been coaching for a number of years…I can’t speak for Saxon, but he wasn’t overlooked last year for Steve Bogan. He was overlooked last year, as the hometown guy with all the credentials, for a guy from Ribet Academy. He was also told he needed and would get varsity experience with the new staff…he ended up coaching freshman ball.

To tab Saxon doesn’t the administration have to admit it made a big mistake? And if they did tab Saxon are they saying now he has the experience necessary when he didn’t a year ago? The administration, district, AD, whomever, screwed up.

***
With the third pick of the 2015 Draft the Jacksonville Jaguars select Chris Blanton, defensive end, Downey.
***

Castaneda One More Time: No coach, I believe, is required to talk to or befriend the media. And I totally get being suspicious of somebody with a camera, recorder, steno, and pen. On the flip side, good public relations always helps.

Back to Saxon: If you think you have a chance to win right now, perhaps Saxon is not the guy. Maybe they need to look at somebody with experience who can put them over the top.

Truth is this program is closer to fifth place and hoping for third (and the expected first round blowout at Colony). It’s not close to playing for a title.

So if the plan is to build consistency and reestablish a program that is competitive year in and year out, Saxon would be your guy.

***
With the fourth pick of the 2015 Draft the Oakland Raiders select: Connor Van ginkel, wide receiver, Crescenta Valley.
***

Last Add Saxon: If I’m Saxon…I say NO! The culture has changed at Temple City. It is no longer a school that is lead by its football program, but by its performing arts. Performing arts are fine, but TC is one high school, in a small district, and it needs resources if it is going to compete. They chose a walk on from a small school a year ago, I think that indicates where they are headed.

Beyond Saxon? Wow, in a small district it all comes down to who has a teaching job and if there is a teaching position available.

***
With the fifth pick of the 2015 Draft the Washington Redskins select: Tyler Ili, linebacker, West Covina.
***

Last Add Castaneda: I love programs/systems that look at the numbers and realize what they can and cannot do. A few years ago I thought El Monte was crazy, but I’ve come to understand there are non-conventional things that need to be done on the field to give a team a chance to win. I love seeing teams employing the onside kick as a strategy, going for it on fourth down, and looking for two after touchdowns.

It’s not perfect, and its not for everybody, but its worked at El Monte. Has it produced a ring? No. But they weren’t getting a ring going the conventional route, at least now they are always in the conversation.

***
With sixth pick of the 2015 Draft the New York Jets select: Tevita Sina, defensive end, Los Altos.
***

To those contemplating transfers…Unless you are looking to get out of Pasadena Marshall, Blair, or some other purgatory…stay put.
