Josh Staumont strikes out nine in the Cougar win over UC San Diego<\/p><\/div>\n

(Mazmanian Field\u00a0– Mt. San Antonio College) –\u00a0Azusa Pacific\u00a0racked up 15 hits,\u00a0including five for extra bases, in a 17-11 win over UC San Diego\u00a0Thursday night in the first round of the\u00a0NCAA Division II West Regional Playoffs.<\/p>\n

The Cougars led\u00a017-4 after six innings but then had to hold on as\u00a0UC San Diego scored the last seven runs\u00a0of the game, including five in the\u00a0seventh.<\/p>\n

There were ten pitchers used in all\u00a0including six by APU. Josh Staumont\u00a0started and went the first five and one-third innings allowing\u00a0four earned runs and three hits. He struck out nine but had some control problems walking six.<\/p>\n

“Josh overcomes adversity,” said Azusa Pacific Coach Paul Svagdis. “He’s definitely a guy that can pitch on the next level.”<\/p>\n

APU was on the offensive from the get go. The Cougars\u00a0posted four in the first inning, and led 5-2 after four. They broke it wide open with\u00a0seven\u00a0 in the fifth\u00a0and five more in the sixth.\u00a0Jordan Brower led the Cougar attack\u00a0with three hits, three RBIs and a run scored. Pablo O’Connor\u00a0also had three hits including a double and a ribbie.<\/p>\n

The Cougars had\u00a0five players with multiple hit games\u00a0as Mitch Dergazarian,\u00a0Blake James and Michael Staudinger\u00a0all had two hits each.<\/p>\n

“It was a surprise to me definitely that we scored that many runs. Donatella (Justin), UC San Diego starter, is one of the best in the division,”\u00a0Svagdis said. “Who would have thought we would score that many runs?”<\/p>\n

Donatella was touched up for\u00a0nine runs and nine hits in four and one-third innings. The Tritons bullpen didn’t fare much better\u00a0giving up eight runs the rest of the way.<\/p>\n

The game was seemingly over with the Cougs up\u00a017-4 after a\u00a0five run sixth. But the Tritons came up with five in the seventh and two in the eighth to make it interesting. Christian Leung had two hits, two RBIs for UC San Diego.<\/p>\n

Azusa Pacific now moves on to play\u00a0Cal Baptist Friday night at 8:30.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
