Passing league tournaments are a gold mine of information. Heck I really don’t care who wins, Bishop Amat beat Upland at the Charter Oak Tourney Saturday, but what I do care about is getting to talk to 20 different coaches in a two hour period.<\/p>\n

I’m not there to see a team win a tournament championship in May, I’m looking for info on who is the new DC on a team in the Mission Valley League, or how the new quarterback looks for that team in the Almont. I’m looking for scoop. There was plenty of it Saturday.<\/p>\n

Latest update on the El Monte situation: Head Coach Joel Sanchez is staying on. The Lions have some catching up to do since things have been at a standstill since the Brian Tabatabai dismissal, but the good news is Sanchez will be the one leading the team. A new coach at this point in time would have been disastrous.<\/p>\n

Marc Paramo is running the offense at Rosemead and he’s also running the defense…sort of. The problem is right now he only has three coaches on staff. There could be an announcement coming this week on the hiring of a new (name) coach at Rosemead. Stay tuned.<\/p>\n

South El Monte officially opens spring football Monday. No the Eagles weren’t at the Charter Oak Tournament but new HC Frank Gallardo was.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a completely different staff from last year. We got the kids in the weight room and we’re working hard,\u201d Gallardo said.<\/p>\n

Oh and by the way contrary to popular website comments, running back Marcos Lopez is coming back to South. He’s not transferring.<\/p>\n

Margarito Beltran was not on hand Saturday to coach his team but no, he has not stepped down as the head coach at\u00a0La Serna. He’s on medical leave and will be returning in the summer.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course I’ll be back in the summer. My assistants are very capable of running spring ball. The core of my staff has been together for eight years so we should not miss a beat,\u201d Beltran said. \u201cI look forward to an exciting season. We had some guys missing Saturday because they were in CIF track. Championships are won in December, not May.\u201d<\/p>\n

La Salle quarterback Jake Caan, who was throwing at Charter Oak on Saturday, is the son of actor James Caan.<\/p>\n

Chuck Leonardis, former Alhambra HC and Arcadia assistant has landed as an assistant coach for a prominent area team. Details to be provided soon.<\/p>\n

Back to Tabatabai for a moment; don’t be surprised to see him turn up on somebody’s staff soon. He still wants to coach and there is always room for a good offensive mind.<\/p>\n

Ran into Keyshawn Johnson at Charter Oak. No he didn’t tell me to throw him the damn ball.<\/p>\n
