(El Monte, Ca) \u2013 La Canada advanced to the second round of the Arroyo Lady Knights Tournament with a convincing 61-24 victory over Charter Oak.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey are a good team,\u201d said Lady Chargers head coach Keisa Pineda.\u00a0 \u201cI felt we needed to play a perfect game to beat them.\u00a0 I think in the first half we competed.\u00a0 We just didn\u2019t take care of the ball.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Lady Spartans were able to blow the game open in the second quarter when they closed the half on a 10-3 run to extend their lead to 17 points.<\/p>\n
Senior Courtney McCutchan poured in 21 points with 17 coming in the first half to lead the Lady Spartans in scoring.\u00a0 Tia Chen added 19 points, while also leading the team with four assists.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis was Courtney\u2019s welcome back game,\u201d said La Canada head coach Tamar Hill.\u00a0 \u201cShe has been solid for us.\u00a0 It is nice to see Courtney back to her usual self.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Lady Chargers (2-5) committed 25 turnovers in the loss and are now relegated to playing in the loser\u2019s bracket for the remainder of the tournament.<\/p>\n
Charter Oak was led by Melissa Suarez\u2019s 13 points on the evening.<\/p>\n
La Canada (7-0) will face host Arroyo (4-3) in the second round on Wednesday at 6 p.m.<\/p>\n
