\u00a0 I was glad to find out I wasn\u2019t the only one just starting my Christmas shopping on December 21. While walking through the Santa Anita Mall Monday night I ran into Roosevelt Coach Javier Cid and San Gabriel Coach Keith Jones. No, they weren\u2019t discussing this years Christmas sales but instead they were talking shop. They already sounded like they were ready for some football. \u00a0<\/p>\n
\u00a0 \u201cWe\u2019re having a coaches meeting,\u201d Jones said.\u00a0 \u201cOh is this late? Then I\u2019m really in trouble,\u201d Cid said, \u201cActually this is early for me.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u00a0 Among other things Jones and Cid were in agreement on what a great job the Mid Valley News\/Sports does of covering High School football.<\/p>\n
\u00a0 \u201cYou guys were everywhere,\u201d Jones said. \u201cYou really get to know the players and what they\u2019re about and not lot of people do that.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u00a0 \u201cI saw you at the South Hills-Diamond Ranch playoff game,\u201d Cid said. \u201cI even saw you guys at one of our games this year.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u00a0 Corey \u201cCorn Dog\u201d Kowk was the Mid Valley staffer that covered Roosevelt\u2019s playoff game and Cid said he was going to get him a Roosevelt jersey for his efforts.<\/p>\n
\u00a0 \u201cYeah I know he always likes to wear different jerseys so I told him I\u2019d get him one of ours. I\u2019m a big fan of the Mid Valley.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u00a0 Thanks for the props guys and you expect even more coverage next year. Is there any way we can add the City section to our coverage?<\/p>\n
\u00a0 Even though South Hills and Charter Oak are moving out of the Southeast they will still be on our radar.<\/p>\n
\u00a0 Jones also said that his team fell too far behind early to West Covina in the first round of the playoffs and just wasn\u2019t able to recover.<\/p>\n
\u00a0 \u201cWe have a young team and I think we got a little intimidated. We have a lot of juniors and sophomores.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u00a0 The Matadors lose Isaac Valdez but have a solid nucleus of players returning. Rosemead is on SG\u2019s non league schedule for next year.<\/p>\n
\u00a0 While we were discussing our all Mid Valley selections over Lamp Post Pizza Monday night it occurred to me there were a couple of really good tight ends in the Mid-Valley and Southeast Divisions. Justin Winrow of San Dimas and South Hills\u2019 Dakota Behr were the best at that position in recent memory.<\/p>\n
\u00a0 The Huskies\u2019 Geoffrey Vaughns is so good it\u2019s hard to know where to put him. Wide receiver? Running back? Defensive back? Maybe we should name him the winner of the first annual Leroy Keyes Award.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u00a0 I don\u2019t think it is going to be a very Merry Christmas for Redskins\u2019 Coach Jim Zorn. Was he trying to get fired? With new General\u00a0Manager Bruce Allen looking on, he has his team line up in a \u201cswinging gate\u201d formation just before halftime instead of kicking a field goal. Already down 24-0 don\u2019t you need some points on the board?<\/p>\n
\u00a0 Then the Giants call time out allowing Zorn time to come to his senses. Instead the Skins line up the same way and attempt a pass. Nobody in the stadium is fooled including the G-Men and a dying quail falls incomplete. If anybody wasn\u2019t sure about Zorn\u2019s status before is there any question now?<\/p>\n
\u00a0 As tragic as the death of Bengals\u2019 receiver Chris Henry was, didn\u2019t he seem like a ticking time bomb that was eventually going to explode?<\/p>\n
\u00a0 Does USC fan really care if Joe McKnight does or does not play in the upcoming Bowl game? I mean it\u2019s the Emerald Bowl! Something about a Southern California team playing in a Bowl game in San Francisco just doesn\u2019t seem right.<\/p>\n
\u00a0 At least we know now that Frank McCourt was telling the truth when he said his pending divorce will not affect the way the Dodgers do business. With the signing of second baseman Jamey Carroll and pitcher Justin Miller haven\u2019t the Dodgers just punched their ticket to the World Series?<\/p>\n
