Andrew Elffers in his first start as a Cougar, threw for 184 yards and two touchdowns<\/p><\/div>\n

(Glendora) – Kurt Scoby rushed for 146 yards and four touchdowns and Andrew Elffers\u00a0threw for two scores as Azusa Pacific cruised to a\u00a061-14 rout of Dixie State Saturday night at Citrus College.<\/p>\n

Scoby scored on a\u00a033 yard run to open the scoring and after the\u00a0Cougars held Dixie\u00a0State\u00a0Tarik Myles\u00a0returned a punt 57 yards for a touchdown and just like that it was 14-0 and the\u00a0Cougars were off and running.<\/p>\n

Early in the\u00a0second quarter\u00a0Andrew Elffers\u00a0hit Ethan Zeidler on a 46-yard touchdown pass to make it\u00a021-0. It was the first touchdown pass of his college career.<\/p>\n

Another day at the office for Kurt Scoby- Four touchdowns<\/p><\/div>\n

A blocked punt set up the Cougars again at the Dixie State 45.\u00a0They immediately took\u00a0advantage when Scoby busted loose again for\u00a0a 24-yard touchdown run and the Cougars\u00a0were\u00a0cruising 28-0.<\/p>\n

Red Storm quarterback Tyson Blackner scored on a seven-yard run with 40 seconds left in the first half to get Dixie State on the board but then made a critical mistake. Instead of booting it deep they attempted an onside kick and\u00a0the Cougars recover at the 45.\u00a0Elffers cashed in\u00a0with a\u00a029-yard touchdown pass to\u00a0Blake Robertson with seven seconds left\u00a0in the half to make\u00a0it 35-7.<\/p>\n

Scoby already\u00a0had\u00a0114 yards rushing\u00a0at the half and\u00a0Elffers was\u00a05 of 7 for\u00a096 yards and two scores.\u00a0He threw an interception early in the contest but then seemed to settle in.<\/p>\n

Elffers\u00a0completed 9 of 13 for 184 yards overall and also ran for 86.<\/p>\n

“I knew I was eventually going to get my shot.\u00a0My job as just to take advantage of it,” Elffers said.\u00a0“It all starts with the line. They did a great job up front.”<\/p>\n

On the first possession of the second half the Cougars\u00a0marched down the field\u00a0and Scoby capped\u00a0it with a seven-yard TD run – his third score of the night.<\/p>\n

After a bad snap resulted in a safety for the Cougars\u00a0Scoby picked up number four\u00a0of the night on the next possession with a 14-yard jaunt to make it\u00a051-7 with 8:33 left in the third.<\/p>\n

D.J. Morgan, spelling Scoby got his first touchdown of the season\u00a0on a three-yard run late in the third quarter to give Azusa Pacific a 58-7 lead.<\/p>\n

Jacob Hall kicked the Cougars past the 60 mark with a 34-yard field goal\u00a0in the fourth quarter.<\/p>\n

Orlando Wallace scored on a one-yard run for the Red Storm with 56 seconds left to\u00a0finish the scoring.<\/p>\n

“I feel that was our most complete game of the year. Each week we just keep getting better and better.\u00a0It may have taken longer than we would but\u00a0we are getting better,”\u00a0said Azusa Pacific\u00a0head coach Victor Santa Cruz.<\/p>\n

Santa Cruz also liked what he saw of Scoby. “He’s a very special young man,”\u00a0Santa Cruz said.<\/p>\n

Zeidler caught three passes for\u00a0104 yards and a touchdown for the Cougars as the offense piled up nearly 500 yards.\u00a0Defensively\u00a0the Cougs gave up just the 14 points and\u00a0287 total yards.<\/p>\n

“They were flying around and tackling.\u00a0They were very impressive,” Santa Cruz said.<\/p>\n

The Cougars improved to\u00a04-3 overall and\u00a02-2 in the GNAC while Dixie State\u00a02-5 and 1-3.<\/p>\n

Next week APU hosts\u00a0South Dakota Mines.<\/p>\n
