(La Canada, Ca) \u2013 La Canada\u2019s Shannon Denney scored a school record 42 points to lead the Lady Spartans to a 76-33 win over San Marino in Rio Hondo League play.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt felt real good to break the record,\u201d said Denney.\u00a0 \u201cEarly on in the game I was getting frustrated with San Marino\u2019s style of play but it made me stronger. I really didn\u2019t even know how close to the record I was.\u201d<\/p>\n
Denney broke the single game scoring record held by Mellissa Lord in the fourth quarter of a lopsided victory that saw her teammates lobby for her to get the ball late in the game to break the 17 year record.<\/p>\n
\u201cShannon\u2019s teammates wanted her on the floor to get the record,\u201d said La Canada head coach Tamar Hill.\u00a0 \u201cIn my 10 years of coaching I have never seen that accomplished.\u00a0 I knew she was close to putting her name up on the wall and she deserved to break the record once she got close.\u201d<\/p>\n
Denney would score 21 points in each half and was red-hot from the field shooting 20 of 23.\u00a0 In addition, Denney had 15 rebounds and one steal.<\/p>\n
The Titans played an aggressive style defense that caused problems for La Canada early in the first quarter as they only led by four.<\/p>\n
After the first quarter it was all Lady Spartans as they went on a 21-6 run in the second quarter to blow open a close game.<\/p>\n
San Marino was led by Christine Law\u2019s 13 points on the night.<\/p>\n
The Lady Spartans improved to 14-3 and 1-0 in league, while the Titans dropped to 7-9 and 0-1.<\/p>\n
