Playoff Changes in the CIF SS<\/p><\/div>\n

(Long Beach) – The CIF Southern Section member schools approved a new playoff format Wednesday morning at its council meeting\u00a0in Long Beach. <\/p>\n

The new playoff divisions\u00a0will be based on\u00a0“Competitive Equity”\u00a0for teams and not determined by leagues. Each school in each sport will be\u00a0evaluated on\u00a0an annual basis over their performance over the last two years.\u00a0Regular season record, strength of schedule and playoff performance will be used to\u00a0determine what division the teams will be placed in.<\/p>\n

Each school\u00a0will be advised in August on an annual basis as to what\u00a0division they will be\u00a0in.<\/p>\n

The proposal, which will be effective\u00a0for the 2016-’17 year, was approved by a vote of 74-10 with one abstaining. The new playoff structure will affect every bracket sport in the CIF SS including football, baseball, basketball and soccer among others.<\/p>\n

With the power rankings\u00a0being updated each year, it would be\u00a0possible to have six different teams in one league in six different divisions.<\/p>\n

CIF SS\u00a0commissioner Rob Wigod\u00a0said that the new format, although not a finished\u00a0product, will be around for the long haul.<\/p>\n
