Quarterback Andrew Elffers used his arm and his legs to beat Humboldt State<\/p><\/div>\n

(Glendora) – Azusa Pacific\u00a0jumped out to a 24-6 halftime lead\u00a0and rolled to a 45-13 win over\u00a0over Humboldt State\u00a0Saturday night at Citrus College.<\/p>\n

Kurt Scoby scored\u00a0on a 17-yard run with 3:42 left\u00a0in the first quarter to open up the scoring.\u00a0Humboldt State responded with a 50-yard strike from Robert Webber to Richard Doctor. The extra point was missed\u00a0and the Cougars still led 7-6.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately for Lumberjack fans, it got ugly after that as the Cougars\u00a0reeled off the next\u00a038 points. Aaron Berry returned a fumble 62 yards for a score and Jamie Cacciatore booted a\u00a025-yard field goal for\u00a0a 17-6 advantage.<\/p>\n

Scoby found the end zone again as he hauled in a seven-yard pass\u00a0from Andrew Elffers with just over two minutes left in the half. The Cougars took a 24-6 lead into the break.<\/p>\n

In the third quarter Aaron Baltazar ripped off a 40-yard run right\u00a0through the heart of the Humboldt State defense and the Cougs\u00a0were cruising\u00a031-6.<\/p>\n

In the fourth\u00a0quarter Elffers got loose on the ground,\u00a0rumbling 18 yards for the touchdown.\u00a0With five minutes left,\u00a0Chad Jeffries\u00a0found Weston Carr\u00a0in the right corner of the endzone\u00a0for a nine-yard TD strike for a 45-6 lead.<\/p>\n

Isaiah Hall\u00a0scored on a two-yard run late in the contest for Humboldt State for the final tally.<\/p>\n

Elffers had a big game for the Cougars.\u00a0He completed 18 of 25 for 303 yards and a touchdown with an interception.\u00a0 He also rushed\u00a0for 64 yards and a TD on six carries. Carr caught six passes for 79 yards and a score. Chris Solomon led APU\u00a0in rushing\u00a0with 68 yards on six carries. Scoby finished with 38 yards and a touchdown on seven carries.<\/p>\n

The game was the 500th in Azusa Pacific history.<\/p>\n

“I think the one difference is the leadership on this team. This is a rivalry game every year, every time we play. I don’t care where we\u00a0play it’s an intense football game,”\u00a0said Coach Victor Santa Cruz.\u00a0“Tonight the guys saw the fruit of their preparation. I think they were hungry and they took this program to the next level.”<\/p>\n

Elffers\u00a0was also impressed with the way his team performed after a loss last week.<\/p>\n

“It was a huge growing experience for us. You never like to lose but this whole week in practice, day in and day out,\u00a0offensively and defensively, we just went to work. And it was about getting better each and every day,”\u00a0Elffers said.<\/p>\n

Azusa Pacific improved to\u00a06-1, 5-0 in the GNAC\u00a0with the win while the Lumberjacks fell to 3-4, and 1-4.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
