Tyler Nevens Broke off a 51 yard TD run late in the fourth quarter to ice it<\/p><\/div>\n

(Covina) –\u00a0Los Altos\u00a0got a pick six on\u00a0its first defensive series of the game to set the tone and went on to beat Charter Oak\u00a021-7 Friday night on the Chargers home field. <\/p>\n

In a game that was\u00a0battle for the top spot in the Hacienda League, the Conquerors held Charter Oak scoreless\u00a0until late in the fourth quarter when Zack Niccoli\u00a0found Jermaine Braddock\u00a0from\u00a014 yards\u00a0out with just 3:09 left in the\u00a0contest to cut the Los Altos lead to 14-7.\u00a0Los Altos\u00a0immediately responded with\u00a0the knockout punch on the next possession when Tyler Nevens broke off a 51 yard touchdown run.<\/p>\n

Charter Oak got the ball back and\u00a0moved it down to the Conqueror 17 yard line but was stopped\u00a0on fourth down when Niccoli’s pass fell incomplete.<\/p>\n

The Conq defense\u00a0stymied the Chargers all night\u00a0forcing them to punt\u00a0five times and\u00a0causing a pair of turnovers\u00a0with the interception. Matthew Takata\u00a0started for Charter Oak\u00a0and he was bitten early.\u00a0Anthony Lopez picked off an errant Takata pass and returned it 40 yards for a score\u00a0with just a\u00a01:43 into the game Los Altos was up 7-0.<\/p>\n

“I call him squirt because he only\u00a0stands about this big,”\u00a0said Los Altos HC Dale Ziola\u00a0holding out his hand to show\u00a0Lopez’ height. “But he plays\u00a0about ten feet tall. He’s a good little football player. Absolutely.”<\/p>\n

On the Conquerors first offensive series of the game\u00a0they came up with another big play.\u00a0Kody Olmos found his tight end Andrew Manuele over the middle and he rumbled 61 yards for the touchdown. Before the first quarter was over\u00a0the Conquerors were up two scores.<\/p>\n

The score stayed that way until the fourth quarter until Niccoli, in place of Takata, connected with Braddock for their first score.<\/p>\n

Nevens ended up with 95 yards on 21 carries, 51 of them coming on the fourth quarter TD run. Olmos completed just three passes\u00a0in seven attempts\u00a0for 72 yards and a touchdown.<\/p>\n

Brian\u00a0Casteel caught\u00a0six passes for 77 yards and\u00a0Braddock caught\u00a0nine for 109 yards for Charter Oak, but the Chargers could only manage the one score.<\/p>\n

“They played outstanding. Our defense played great. Words can’t explain how proud I am of them,” Ziola said.\u00a0“The kids played with guts tonight. Sheer guts man. They (Charter Oak) did a good job on defense as well, slowing us down a little but the kids hung tough.\u00a0That’s what happens when you play good teams. It’s a battle.”<\/p>\n

With the victory\u00a0Los Altos remains\u00a0undefeated\u00a0at 9-0 while Charter Oak lost its first game and is now 8-1. The Conquerors\u00a0have\u00a0one more hurdle to clear\u00a0when they face West Covina next week while Charter Oak will end the regular\u00a0season with\u00a0Walnut.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
