(Covina) – Jonathan Olguin blasted into the end zone from three yards out to give Montebello a 17-10 win over Covina in overtime\u00a0Thursday night at Covina District Field to\u00a0advance to the semi finals of the Division 11 playoffs. <\/p>\n

The Oilers\u00a0had to rally from a 10-0 halftime deficit for the victory. They got a 30-yard field from Kevin Bravo in the third quarter to cut it to 10-3.\u00a0In the fourth quarter Gabriel Tapia scrambled out of danger and fired a 36-yard strike to Brandon Gonzalez in the right corner of the\u00a0end zone to tie it. Gonzalez had to fight off the cornerback\u00a0and pull it in before coming down with the ball.<\/p>\n

Montebello’s “Dark Side” defense held Covina to 10 points.<\/p><\/div>\n

After\u00a0Olguin gave Montebello its first lead of the night,\u00a0the Oiler defense held\u00a0the Colts on four downs. Covina’s Nin Burns, a freshman filling in for the injured Anthony Meneses, threw a last gasp\u00a0pass to the back of the zone but it was batted away on fourth down. It was the second consecutive game that the Colts played in overtime.<\/p>\n

Covina drew first blood on the first drive of the game\u00a0when\u00a0Tristan Sprague booted a\u00a026-yard field goal to\u00a0cap a drive that started at the Colt\u00a027-yard line.\u00a0The Colts made it 10-0 in the second quarter when Burns found Jordan Fisher for a four-yard TD pass.<\/p>\n

Montebello\u00a0was held scoreless\u00a0in the first half thanks in part to two costly turnovers.\u00a0Tapia was picked off by Richard Randazzo\u00a0in the second quarter\u00a0but the Oilers\u00a0were in position to cut the Covina lead to 10-7\u00a0late in the second but a botched snap led to a fumble and\u00a0Covina recovered at its own\u00a012 yard line.<\/p>\n

In the third quarter Montebello started moving the ball mostly behind\u00a0Tapia\u00a0runs.\u00a0Montebello’s defense also forced\u00a0two Colt turnovers in the second half\u00a0as Isaiah Jenkins and Mario Hernandez\u00a0both intercepted Burns.<\/p>\n

Burns however played well, especially considering he’s\u00a0a freshman on a big stage. He completed\u00a020-42 for 266 yards and a touchdown but he was hurt by the two interceptions.\u00a0Fisher caught 13 passes for 169 yards and a score.<\/p>\n

Tapia ran for 64 yards and\u00a0threw for 167 and a touchdown. Andrew Moreno added\u00a046 yards on the ground for the Oilers.<\/p>\n

Andy Brown caught three passes for 34 yards.\u00a0Gonzalez touchdown grab was his only reception\u00a0of the night.<\/p>\n

Covina, which beat Victor Valley last week in OT, finished\u00a07-5 overall. Montebello, now 11-1 overall will\u00a0face either Rancho Alamitos or Valley View next week.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
