The kids battled.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Matadores have\u00a0proven the last couple of years that they can play with anybody. They won\u00a0A CIF and a State championship last year\u00a0and after\u00a0devouring everybody in the Suburban League\u00a0this season appeared to be on their\u00a0way to another memorable year. Then suddenly they found themselves\u00a0down 31-10.<\/p>\n<p>It had to look bleak\u00a0but when you have an Elijah Hicks, a Tristan Meyer and a Jeremy Clark\u00a0you got a shot. Hicks returns a kick\u00a0off for a score,\u00a0Meyer hits Clark for another touchdown and now the deficit\u00a0is just two.\u00a0Then Brandon Petruescu&#8230;who?&#8230;Petruescu&#8230;boots the game winner with 12 seconds left.<\/p>\n<p>You have to think this\u00a0gives La Mirada\u00a0all the confidence heading into the next round. Arroyo, which was down\u00a021-7 in the first quarter,\u00a0outscored the Spartans\u00a035-7 over the next three quarters.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think offensively we showed it\u00a0last week against Verbum Dei.\u00a0We came out in the second half and got a turnover and just drove and drove\u00a0and drove and picked up the tempo and we saw that we did have another gear,&#8221; Singiser said. &#8220;We still got a lot of things to clean up \u00a0though.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Now Arroyo\u00a0gets Segerstrom. What is Segerstrom? I didn&#8217;t even know such a school existed until now. &#8220;They&#8217;re physical, big&#8230;well coached.\u00a0About what you&#8217;d expect for\u00a0this tme of year,&#8221; Singiser added.<\/p>\n<p>**<\/p>\n<p>So South El Monte and Arroyo in the semi finals in the same year, but not in the same division.\u00a0Who would have thunk it?<\/p>\n<p>**<\/p>\n<p>Did you get a glimpse of the\u00a0box score of the South El Monte &#8211; Santa Clarita Christian game?\u00a0Talk about\u00a0polar\u00a0opposites. In a 61-47 South El Monte win,\u00a0the Eagles had 623 yards rushing but just 15 passing,\u00a0while Santa Clarita racked up 636 yards passing and 17 rushing. South running back Sal Tovar continued his assault on the school record books with 308 yards rushing. Okay, I thought Northview would beat Burbank. Hey, I missed one. Stuff happens. The Vikings had just rolled over\u00a0Chino after just rolling through the Valle Vista.\u00a0It looked like it could be a year for a possible\u00a0CIF title appearance.\u00a0Heck, their next opponent would have been Don Lugo and they had already beaten Don Lugo.\u00a0But Burbank is tough&#8230;tougher than I gave them credit for.<\/p>\n<p>One\u00a0of those people that didn&#8217;t think Northview would win was former El Rancho and current Pacifica\u00a0Head Coach Vinnie Lopez.\u00a0And he definitely reminded me.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I called it.\u00a0Burbank is well coached,&#8221; Lopez said early Saturday morning. &#8220;Burbank will win the division.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Northview Coach Marcel Perez\u00a0thought this might be the year the Vikes take that next step.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m pretty upset. I think\u00a0we should have won it this year but I guess\u00a0we got to get back to work and make a run for it again next year,&#8221;\u00a0Perez said &#8220;We graduate a lot of guys but I\u00a0think we&#8217;re going to be\u00a0really good\u00a0again. Building that culture of winning is the expectation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Burbank\u00a0is\u00a0on the cusp of history\u00a0with their 30-27\u00a0win over Northview. The Bulldogs have\u00a0never appeared in a CIF Final game.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re excited to be honest.\u00a0We&#8217;re playing in the semis.\u00a0As for how we match up against Don Lugo this game is going to be a war. Coach (Greg) Gano and his staff\u00a0have a big physical team with skill kids that make plays on both sides of the ball,&#8221;\u00a0said Burbank Head Coach Richard Broussard. &#8220;They have dominated their first two opponents in impressive fashion. It&#8217;s going to be a daunting task to make history at Burbank &#8211;\u00a0no team has ever made it to the final.\u00a0But our team is gritty and up for the challenge. It&#8217;s going to be fun playing one more time at Memorial Field.
