I would think coaches and parents could Learn a lot.\u201d\u2014John \u201cCoach\u201d Kentera, former sports talk host at Mighty 690 &amp; Mighty 1090<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p>I\u2019ve often compared the title \u201cJournalist\u201d to little more than ambulance chaser\u2026so I\u2019ve never even tried to describe myself as such\u2026 I never liked being referenced as a \u201cReporter.\u201d \u2026 \u201cSportswriter\u201d was always easy for me to identify with because I wrote about sports\u2026I love sports stories\u2026I love watching things play out\u2026up close\u2026I\u2019ve had the opportunity to see games from the press box and the sideline\u2026The sideline is always better\u2026Because not only do you get the game but you get free theater.<\/p>\n<p>I share this because few things in the last 19 seasons have been as fun\/joyful as seeing Arroyo cross the final hurdle and reach the CIF-Finals.<\/p>\n<p>It was a long road for Jim Singiser, his family, Chris MacMillan and his staff. I can say it was long, but maybe it would be better if I showed you.<\/p>\n<p>So, by the numbers:<\/p>\n<p>Friday night\u2019s contest against Segerstrom was the 162nd of Singiser\u2019s career as the Arroyo HC.<br \/>\nHis overall record is: 113-49<\/p>\n<p>It was his 23rd playoff game and his record is now: 11-12<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Previous Seasons Ended on These Dates Against These Schools:<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">11\/21\/2003: San Gabriel<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\">12\/03\/2004: South Hills<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\">11\/25\/2005: South Hills<\/span><br \/>\n11\/17\/2006: La Habra<br \/>\n11\/16\/2007: Fullerton<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\">11\/21\/2008: Temple City<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">11\/20\/2009: Whittier Christian<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">11\/19\/2010: San Dimas<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">11\/25\/2011: San Gabriel<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">11\/16\/2012: Sierra Canyon<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">11\/29\/2013: San Dimas<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800000;\">11\/13\/2015: Covina<\/span><br \/>\n(The heartbreak in all of these games is too much for one column.)<\/p>\n<p>The Knights first game under Singiser: September 12, 2003.<br \/>\nIt was a 28-14 loss to Temple City at B.L. Bergstrom. His quote to me after was: \u201cWe have a bunch of players who have to realize they aren\u2019t playing J.V. anymore. It\u2019s not counting the opening and closing the weight room. It\u2019s not counting managing crisis and self-reporting. It\u2019s not counting the moments when the post-season losses began to pile up and doubt attempted to creep in. Feelings that what you want most of all in this game is never going to happen.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a lot of time and a journey that Frodo and Sam would be proud of&#8230;To come all this way and finally get the win they&#8217;d spent so long looking for.<\/p>\n<p>So the sportswriter in me wanted to cry\u2026I\u2019ve had lunch with the Arroyo staff once in all this time\u2026was honored to help out briefly during a difficult time\u2026but I don\u2019t hang with them\u2026I\u2019ve never followed them into the locker room at the half\u2026and I didn\u2019t need to\u2026Just what I saw and continue to see on the sideline was enough.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a great story\u2026and it\u2019s not a story that lessens South El Monte this year or the Aerial Circus at El Monte a few years ago. It doesn\u2019t take away from Schurr\u2019s magical run in 2006 or the improbably San Gabriel miracles of 2003 &amp; 2011. It doesn\u2019t make Monrovia\u2019s dynasty or Rosemead\u2019s 2008 season any less special.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s Arroyo\u2019s story\u2026and it\u2019s a great one&#8230;And I am so happy I got to see it.<\/p>\n<p>***<br \/>\nDid Eric Dickerson say something about Rams HC, Jeff Fisher\u2019s family? His children? Because if he didn\u2019t Fisher needs to be spending his energy on how he\u2019s going to achieve some \u201c7-9 Bolshoi.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Right now it would be optimistic to say the Rams will finish 5-11. Other than that, the number two pick in the draft at tackle is a flop, Rodger Saffold is hurt, and Los Angeles struggles in New Orleans\u2026Some things never change.<\/p>\n<p>***<\/p>\n<p>Its been a difficult Fantasy Football season\u2026Even though I started out 3-0, I knew I was doomed without having a running game. I currently stand at 5-7 with Andy VillaTheDevil in first place owning a 9-3 record.<\/p>\n<p>But two of VillaTheDevil\u2019s losses have been to my El Monte Jets\u2026So, yeah, I\u2019m starting to feel good about the season\u2026This must be what it felt like to be a San Francisco Giants fan from 1955 through 2009\u2026to play and live for only beating the Dodgers\u2026Which sounds like the equivalent of Nacho getting up every morning at 5:A.M. to make some soup\u2026<\/p>\n<p>***<\/p>\n<p>Before the second half kick-off at B.L. Bergstrom last Friday night with Arroyo leading, 49-14.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny pearls of wisdom for the third quarter?\u201d\u2014Knights OC, Chris MacMillan<br \/>\n\u201cYeah, get that offense of yours going.
