Instead of “One Year Ago” we had to go back four years ago to bust this one out. It was on December 3, 2016 that Arroyo beat Rancho Mirage 35-34 on a dramatic walk off two point conversion at B.L. Bergstrom Stadium to win the CIF Division 12 Championship. Tim Peterson wrote the game story and Duane Barker took the pictures as all of El Monte celebrated on a Saturday night.<\/p>\n

(El Monte) – Ernesto “Macho”\u00a0Camacho hit Devin Knight in the corner of the end zone\u00a0for a two point conversion in overtime to\u00a0give Arroyo\u00a0a dramatic 35-34 win over Rancho Mirage\u00a0Saturday night at B.L. Bergstrom to win\u00a0the\u00a0CIF\u00a0Division 12 championship.<\/p>\n

After Rancho Mirage scored in OT for a 34-27 lead, Arroyo head coach Jim Singiser\u00a0decided to go for two\u00a0and the win\u00a0if the Knights scored.\u00a0Camacho, out of the shotgun, took the snap,\u00a0rolled\u00a0right and fired a low strike to a sprawling Knight who made\u00a0the grab\u00a0and sent the standing room only crowd into a frenzy.<\/p>\n

Ernesto Camacho led the Knights to a CIF Title!<\/p><\/div>\n

“We decided if we get down there why screw around and keep trying to stop them?\u00a0We’re two yards away from a CIF Championship. I\u00a0like our guys from two yards or three yards,”\u00a0Singiser said.<\/p>\n

It was a two touchdown night for Yezdan Marquez!<\/p><\/div>\n

The Knights forced the overtime when\u00a0Jesse Oritz booted a 41-yard field goal with\u00a010:08 left in the fourth quarter. Rancho Mirage then\u00a0drove down the field for what may have been the game winning march\u00a0but was\u00a0stopped at the Arroyo\u00a019.\u00a0Daniel Whelan, who had kicked two field goals for the Rattlers earlier in the contest, pushed a 36-yard attempt wide right.<\/p>\n

Rancho Mirage took possession first in the OT\u00a0and needed\u00a0just one play\u00a0to get the lead as Kyle Whitefield went 25 yards on a sweep around the right end for the score.\u00a0The Knights used five plays to get in the end zone.\u00a0Camacho scored on a one-yard run to cut it to 34-33. Arroyo called timeout and\u00a0the\u00a0decision was made to set up Camacho’s two point bullet to Knight.<\/p>\n

“There was no question at the end.\u00a0We knew we were going to have a hard time stopping them. Jim (Singiser) made the decision to go for two\u00a0and we had a play ready and thank God it worked,”\u00a0said Arroyo offensive coordinator Chris\u00a0MacMillan.\u00a0“Right after they had scored Jim came to me and said if they do score get a two point play ready just because we didn’t want to draw this thing out. We wanted to end it right there if we could.”<\/p>\n

Arroyo got on the board first marching right down the field\u00a080 yards on the opening drive to go up 7-0. Camacho hit Yezdan Marquez\u00a0with a 24-yard strike for the touchdown.<\/p>\n

Rancho Mirage\u00a0responded with a 31-yard field goal by Whelan to make it 7-3 after one.\u00a0The Knights\u00a0went up\u00a014-3 early in the second quarter\u00a0when Camacho hooked up with Marquez again\u00a0for a nine yard scoring pass. Then the Rancho running attack\u00a0started kicking\u00a0into high gear.<\/p>\n

A long kickoff return set up the Rattlers at the 50 yard line. On the first play of the series\u00a0Whitefield got loose and went 50 yards for the score to cut it to 14-10.\u00a0Whelan\u00a0kicked\u00a0a 26 yard field goal\u00a0on the next possession and the Arroyo lead was just 14-13.<\/p>\n

Arroyo pieced together a key drive just before the half.\u00a0The Knights marched\u00a080 yards on 11 plays\u00a0with Camacho doing it himself from three yards out\u00a0with four seconds left\u00a0in the first half. Arroyo took a 21-13 lead into the break.<\/p>\n

Rancho Mirage took its\u00a0first lead of the game in the third\u00a0quarter. Mason Ferrer took advantage of a missed Arroyo blocking assignment\u00a0and scooped up a blocked punt\u00a0and returned it three yards for a score.<\/p>\n

Oritz answered with a 41-yard field goal\u00a0for a four point advantage\u00a0but\u00a0Whitefield\u00a0scored on a nine-yard run\u00a0to cap a six-play, 67-yard drive and Rancho had its first advantage at\u00a0 27-24.<\/p>\n

Ortiz tied it in the fourth to set up the overtime.<\/p>\n

Arroyo turned the ball over just once on the night as\u00a0Camacho was picked off in the third quarter. Rancho Mirage coughed it up twice\u00a0– both on fumbles.<\/p>\n

Camacho finished the night 20 0f 32 for 230 yards and two touchdowns and one pick.\u00a0He also rushed for\u00a089 yards and a pair\u00a0of scores.\u00a0Marquez had three catches for 47 yards and two\u00a0TDs and\u00a0Knight caught five passes for\u00a047 yards and the game winner.\u00a0Steven Ocariz\u00a0had\u00a016 carries for 65 yards.<\/p>\n

For Rancho Mirage\u00a0Whitefield had 21 carries for 144 yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback David Talley\u00a0threw the ball\u00a0only eight times\u00a0and completed five for 70 yards.\u00a0He rushed for 112 yards on 19 carries.<\/p>\n

Arroyo (13-1) won the CIF title\u00a0for the first time since 1986.\u00a0It was the Knights\u00a0first appearance in a championship game since\u00a01991 and their fourth appearance overall.<\/p>\n
