They were 4-10 coming in and for all intents and purposes the game was meaningless. But it was the way they lost.

When you’re up two touchdowns in the fourth quarter against a team that had one win in 14 games you should put them away. When you’re facing a quarterback that has been known more for his actions off the field than on you should get the job done. When you’ve already blown fourth quarter leads in the past one would think that you would make adjustments and learn from your mistakes. But this is the way it is for the Rams in 2016.

The only bright spot is knowing that a new coach is on the way and hopefully with him comes new hope and optimism. Some of the players on the field against San Francisco could be gone by the time the 2017 season kicks off. With a new coaching staff brings new faces and the way the Rams look right now that’s a good thing.

The scariest part about Colin Kaepernick’s run for the two point conversion was the roar that erupted from the crowd when he crossed the goal line. Wasn’t this game at the LA Coliseum? Wasn’t this supposed to be the hated Niners against the beloved Rams? When the camera panned to the crowd the cheers were coming from 49er fans dressed in red. Okay, so they made the trek down. But where were all of Ram fans? Had they all left already? In a close game in the fourth quarter? Please don’t tell me the city has lost the team already.

Did you hear the other day Jeff Fisher said he wanted to play the Rams? As the coach of who? I know the coaching carousel always allows for someone to get another shot but what NFL team, actually what team on any level, would hire Fisher right now? Fisher had to go and Rob Boras should be next. Who’s the answer? Chucky!

**

I’m not an Oakland Raiders fan at all but what happened to Derek Carr was truly heartbreaking. The Raiders were poised to make a run. The offense was clicking, the defense was solid and even the running game was starting to come around. The thing that couldn’t happen, the absolute worst scenario, the definite deal breaker, was that Carr, the quarterback and leader of the team, the heart and soul of the silver and black, would go down with an injury. So of course Carr breaks a fibula and is out for the season. Just terrible, no other words.

**

Anybody else get the feeling that the New York Jets quit last Saturday against the Patriots?

**

Just watched the Dallas Cowboys destroy the Detroit Lions on Monday Night Football. The Cowboys should have an easy road to the Super Bowl…well unless they have to face the New York Giants. Although it’s hard to beat a team three times in a season the Cowboys would just as soon not have to find out. The victory over the Lions was number 13 for Dak Prescott and the Boys which tied a record for wins by a quarterback in his rookie season. Pittsburgh’s Ben Roethlisberger also won 13 games as a rookie in 2004.

**

Former Mid-Valley Staffers “Big” George Hernandez and Matt “Matty Ice” Shuler engaged in a heated argument on Facebook Monday night about who was the better receiver- Odell Beckham Jr. or Dez Bryant. Hernandez is sold on Beckham while Schuler was honking for Bryant. Who do I like? Antonio Brown.

**

The NBA had no chance on Christmas Day with NFL games on. Christmas has been a day, for the last several years anyway, that was owned by the NBA. The league and ABC plugs it from October on and then televises three or four consecutive games from morning to night. But this year with Christmas falling on Sunday, football was back in the mix. I don’t care if it’s LeBron and Cleveland against Kevin Durant and Golden State, as soon as football started that’s where the channel stayed. I did catch the end of the Lakers-Clippers game though after the last football game ended. Did anybody know Raymond Felton was still in the league?

**

Nothing new on the high school coaching front. I’ve heard a few whispers here and rumors there but it’s usually pretty quiet during the Christmas break. I expect a lot of things to happen the first couple of weeks of January.

**

If the Cowboys do get by the Giants who will they face in the Super Bowl? The popular pick is the Patriots. Tom Brady is playing like Tom Brady and New England has rolled to a 13-2 record. The one team in the AFC that had a shot at the Pats was the Raiders, but with Carr out, not so much. If you’re going to Vegas the safe bet is Dallas vs. New England. If you want to take a chance put some dough on the Kansas City Chiefs.

**

Thoughts and prayers from the Mid Valley go out to the family of Santa Fe high school football player Chandler Ray who died after being hit by a car last Thursday night while riding his bike. Ray, a junior defensive lineman, alternated between the junior varsity and varsity teams this past season.
