Most Valuable Player: What does that mean?\u00a0Where as Player of the Year\u00a0may amount to big numbers,\u00a0enormous talent\u00a0and outstanding performances, MVP means\u00a0who was the most valuable to his particular team.<\/p>\n

Who is that one player\u00a0that the team could simply not do without? Who is the difference between\u00a0wins and losses. Who is the player that if he were to go down to injury,\u00a0the season would be ruined. Sometimes a Player of the Year might be surrounded by so many other good players that the team could still succeed without him.\u00a0Not so with the MVP.<\/p>\n

In 2016\u00a0that player was South El Monte running back Sal Tovar.\u00a0The\u00a0Eagles lost only two games all year – both defeats were to\u00a0CIF champions.\u00a0Division 12 champ Arroyo beat South September 30 and Division 13 champ Rancho Christian knocked off the Eagles in the semi finals.\u00a0Great season.\u00a0But where would the Eagles have been without Tovar?<\/p>\n

South El Monte had 4,935 yards total as a team and Tovar had 2,953 of them. The Eagles scored 66 touchdowns, Tovar had 39 of them. All 39 came on the ground as he rushed for\u00a02,801 yards on 315 carries.\u00a0He averaged 8.9 yards per carry and averaged just over 215 yards per game.<\/p>\n

Three times Tovar rushed for\u00a0over 300 yards including\u00a0308 in a 61-47 second round playoff win over Santa Clarita\u00a0Christian.\u00a0As a team South El Monte rushed for 53 touchdowns.\u00a0Think about that, only 14 of the Eagles\u00a053 rushing touchdowns were by somebody not named Sal Tovar.<\/p>\n

South El Monte had a resurgence this year\u00a0under Frank Gallardo, but its hard to imagine where they\u00a0would have been without\u00a0the junior running back.<\/p>\n
