Tony Zane,\u00a0considered a coaching legend at Baldwin Park, passed away Friday at the age of 76.\u00a0 <\/p>\n
Zane was at Baldwin Park for\u00a031 years,\u00a0the last 13 as head coach. He\u00a0coached former\u00a0NFL player Lawrence Phillips, and led\u00a0the Braves to CIF championships\u00a0in 1980 and 1991.\u00a0He also led\u00a0Baldwin Park\u00a0to 16 league titles.<\/p>\n
Zane retired in 2002, but resurfaced at his\u00a0last coaching stop\u00a0as an assistant at\u00a0Bassett\u00a0under then Olympian head coach Leon Ward in 2009.<\/p>\n
‘Tony was a great man and a great coach.\u00a0He was always\u00a0there for the kids. That’s what I’ll always remember,”\u00a0Ward said Friday night as we stood on the sidelines of the East-West All Star game at West Covina High School.<\/p>\n
“RIP to arguably one of the greatest to ever do it. The talent he knew how to bring out of kids, the drive he instilled in us, the pride of being a part of something that was bigger than us all. NOBODY better at drawing it up in the dirt when the game was on the line. A great man who gave me my first coaching job when I probably didn’t deserve it. Only bagged on you if he loved you….Rest easy Tony Zane… we love you,” former Baldwin Park\u00a0HC\u00a0James Heggins\u00a0posted on Facebook.<\/p>\n
