While former Bulldog quarterback Adam Colman may have been under that radar as far the next head coach, to Burbank it made perfect sense.

Colman is a teacher on campus and he’s been an assistant on the Burbank staff for the last four years. This past season he was the quarterbacks coach and also served as head coach for the JV team. He knows the system and the program. Despite being young (24) when you look at all the variables he’s a perfect fit.

“He’s a good man, mature beyond his years,” said Burbank DC Manuel Lemus. “I’m so proud and happy for him His bond with the boys these past few seasons have made this program feel like a family.”

On campus teacher, former player, previous experience as an assistant at the same program…actually this was no surprise at all.

**

Nothing new out of West Covina on the hiring of a new head coach to replace the departed Mike Maggiore. But there are a couple of assistants that are on campus that would make for a smooth transition. Don’t be surprised if West Covina foll0ws the same route that Burbank took.

**

I’m hearing La Mirada is close. It would be a familiar name…to the people in La Mirada.

**

A couple of weeks ago I dropped a comment on the Temple City story regarding the resignation of HC Marc Shettleroe. Here’s what I wrote.

“I saw the video. It was vulgar, disgusting and totally disrespectful to the Temple City football program. Shettleroe was right to cancel the banquet. In fact there should have been more repercussions but the season is over so there’s nothing more that can be done at this point. Don’t blame Shettleroe, blame the kids who put out that garbage on video. And with no support from anyone (admin, parents, etc.) he was right to resign. As far as the future is concerned, the football program at Temple City is in serious trouble. It may take an act of God to restore what was once a proud, respectable competitive program. Unless there are some drastic changes, football will become a casualty. It’s on life support. The current status is very sad.”

Yes I saw the video and yes it was vulgar and disgusting. But beyond that it showed that the kids really didn’t care about the program. And the way the administration didn’t support Shettleroe when he canceled the football banquet it looks like they don’t care either.

Torosian addressed this recently in his “Fanview” columns. And although he didn’t say Temple City should drop the football program he did write that if another walk on is hired as coach and again it doesn’t work out then maybe it’s time. I agree. Last season was an embarrassment. I mean this is Temple City! The Rams have a football tradition that is as rich as any in the San Gabriel Valley.

While watching the video (that was sent to me without request) I kept thinking what former players would think if they saw it – players like Steve Busick and Don Roberts that played for the legendary Bob Hitchcock in the seventies, to guys like Desmond Reed, Matt Malcynski and Tommy Bullock that excelled on the field in the early 2000s. I know that’s not the image of Temple City football that they want portrayed. I hope the program not only remains in tact but flourishes. But it’s going to take a lot of work. And it all starts with the administration.

**

It kind of flew under the radar but Los Altos running back Tyler Nevens, who probably wasn’t getting as many looks as he should have, signed with San Jose State. The Spartans are getting one heckuva back. I wasn’t surprised that he landed at San Jose State but was surprised that more offers weren’t rolling in. He joins Northview’s Antwaun Ayers who also signed with San Jose State. The Spartans are set at running back and wide receiver for the next four years.

**

A couple of thoughts went through my head as I watched Vanessa Dwyer, a girl that started playing softball at Live Oak Park in Temple City at the age of six, pitching for Vanguard University on Saturday. One was how cool this was to see a local athlete realize her dream and the other was…man, I’m getting old.

**

Heard on a local sports talk radio show this week regarding the Super Bowl. “Well, if Tom Brady wins it will be his fifth Super Bowl victory in seven games. And 5-2 is better than 4-3.” Uh, yeah thanks for the insight.

**

Since I’m posting this before the Super Bowl kicks off I guess I should address the game. I have no dog in the fight but I’ll take Matty Ice and the Falcons 35-31. It’s Ryan’s time.

That’s my principle.

Tim can be reached at tim@midvalleysports or on Twitter @tspeterson40.

By Tim Peterson The Burbank hire may have been a surprise to everybody except the people who knew Burbank.
