(Glendora) \u2013\u00a0Maranatha\u00a0struggled offensively\u00a0for most of the night\u00a0and eventually fell to Rancho Verde\u00a043-41 Saturday night at the Felix Event Center at Azusa\u00a0Pacific\u00a0in the CIF\u00a0 Division 1AA Final.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Minutemen shot just 14 percent from three point land (1 of 7)\u00a0and 66 percent from the line. They\u00a0did manage to shoot 40 percent from the floor but it wasn’t nearly enough.<\/p>\n

Maranatha\u00a0had a shot at the end\u00a0after a\u00a0Sean Espinosa steal and two free throws\u00a0cut the lead to 41-38 with ten seconds left.\u00a0Rancho Verde’s Damien Reedy hit one of two free throws\u00a0to make\u00a0it 42-38 but Chris Austin buried a three for the Minutemen\u00a0to cut it to\u00a042-41. Jaxen Turner’s one free throw made it 43-41\u00a0with two seconds left. Then Austin’s final heave at the buzzer fell short.<\/p>\n

Rancho Verde scored the first six points of the game and led 11-6 after one quarter.\u00a0Reedy hit a three and a bucket spark the Mustangs.<\/p>\n

In the second quarter, Maranatha went on a 6-0 run to tie it at 14. Rancho Verde led 17-14 at the break.<\/p>\n

Austin, who didn’t get many touches in the first half, hit\u00a0a pair of buckets and the Minutemen went\u00a0on a 6-0 run to open the third and grab a 20-17 advantage.<\/p>\n

Rancho Verde answered\u00a0with an 8-2 sprint of its own to go up 25-22 and took a\u00a0five point lead into the fourth quarter, up 29-24.<\/p>\n

Maranatha head coach\u00a0Tim Tucker was furious on the sidelines in the fourth quarter as the Minutemen were\u00a0called for two consecutive offensive fouls.<\/p>\n

Tory Santonio converted a three point play on a driving\u00a0bucket through the lane to put Rancho Verde up 35-29 with 4:00 left.<\/p>\n

Maranatha’s Terrance Lang fouled out with 1:18 left with Rancho Verde up 37-33.<\/p>\n

After a pair of free throws\u00a0Espinosa hit a jumper to get Maranatha within 39-35 with 38 seconds left.<\/p>\n

His subsequent steal and free throws got the Minutemen close but they weren’t able to get over the hump.<\/p>\n

Austin finished with\u00a016 points to lead Maranatha, Espinosa had 11 and Lang had six points and\u00a0five rebounds.<\/p>\n

For the victorious Mustangs,\u00a0Reedy led the team and all scorers with 21\u00a0including two from long range.\u00a0He was 9 of 12 from the field overall. San Antonio had 13.<\/p>\n

For Maranatha the season will continue next week The Minutemen\u00a0now await\u00a0their\u00a0matchup in the State Tournament.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
