(Pasadena) – Maranatha fell behind early\u00a0and\u00a0never could gain\u00a0control in a\u00a066-62 home\u00a0loss to Bakersfield Wednesday night in the first round of the CIF Division II State playoffs.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Drillers\u00a0jumped out to a 10-2 lead\u00a0and still led 16-12 after the first quarter.\u00a0Terrance Lang went to work inside\u00a0in the second quarter\u00a0scoring six points and the Minutemen were tied with seconds left in the first half.\u00a0But Xavier Esquivel buried a long three as the buzzer sounded to give Bakersfield\u00a0a 32-29 advantage at the break.<\/p>\n

Esquivel was on fire in the third\u00a0knocking down\u00a0three from beyond the arc\u00a0and scoring 11 points in the quarter. Maranatha continued to hang around however\u00a0as Lang scored eight more\u00a0and Chris Austin and Freshman Marcus Reedy\u00a0hit a couple of buckets each to keep the Minutemen within two, 51-49, entering the fourth.<\/p>\n

Bakersfield scored the first four points of the fourth to go up six and never relinquished the lead.\u00a0Esquivel it five three pointers in all and led all scorers with 21 points.\u00a0Clayton\u00a0Pruitt was also in doubles\u00a0with 13.<\/p>\n

For Maranatha,\u00a0Lang was a force in the paint with 19 points to lead the way. Chris Austin had 10, and\u00a0guards Sean Espinosa and Skyye Decatur both finished with nine. Reedy added six.<\/p>\n

The Minutemen lost their last two games falling\u00a0in the CIF Final\u00a0last Saturday night to Rancho Verde before succumbing to Bakersfield. They finished the season\u00a018-11 overall.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
