(Carson) – The Galaxy allowed a goal\u00a0in the eighth minute and\u00a0Portland\u00a0made it stand up the rest of the way in a 1-0 win over LA Sunday\u00a0before 20, 982\u00a0at StubHub Center.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Portland scored the lone goal of the game\u00a0as Diego\u00a0Valeri dished it to a wide open\u00a0Diego Chara\u00a0who punched it into the net in the eighth minute. Valeri drew in Galaxy defender Nathan Smith who was caught in a two on one\u00a0allowing for the easy goal by Chara.<\/p>\n

Clement Diop,\u00a0who started\u00a0in goal\u00a0for LA for Brian Rowe\u00a0on a coach’s\u00a0decision, had no chance. Darlington Nagbe\u00a0was\u00a0issued a yellow card for knocking down\u00a0Rafael Garcia in the 24th minute.\u00a0Jelle Van Damme and Fanendo Adi\u00a0exchanged\u00a0pleasantries after the incident.<\/p>\n

Van Damme was\u00a0issued a yellow card\u00a0for contact with\u00a0Chara in the\u00a031st minute. Three minutes later he was\u00a0ejected\u00a0with a second yellow as he was\u00a0called for knocking down\u00a0David Guzman and the Galaxy had to play with 10 men the rest of the contest.\u00a0Bradley Diallo replaced Baggio Huisdic\u00a0after Van Damme was kicked out.<\/p>\n

Four minutes of additional time were added to the first half but the Timbers took the\u00a01-0 lead into the break.<\/p>\n

In the first half the Galaxy had four total shots to just two for Portland.<\/p>\n

Emmanuel Boateng\u00a0replaced Giovani dos Santos to start the second half.<\/p>\n

In the 60th minute Sebastian Blanco launched a chip shot from left side\u00a0that Diop\u00a0went\u00a0up for\u00a0and pulled down.<\/p>\n

Portland\u00a0had another opportunity in\u00a0the 70th minute but Diop made\u00a0the save on a shot by Valeri and then cleared it.<\/p>\n

In the 71st minute\u00a0Jake Gleeson came up big for Portland\u00a0stopping a Galaxy blast.<\/p>\n

One minute later Adi, on a break away, got\u00a0by the LA defense but just when it appeared he could score, Garcia,\u00a0who had tripped on the play, recovered to challenge Adi and stop the threat.<\/p>\n

In the 82nd minute Romain Alessandrini blasted\u00a0a free kick that\u00a0sailed wide left.<\/p>\n

Three minutes of additional time were added to the second half.\u00a0Gleeson made another great save in stoppage\u00a0time and the Timbers went on to the victory.<\/p>\n

“We dug ourselves a hole regardless if the referee made a bad judgment or not,” said Galaxy head coach Curt Onalfo on the Van Damme call. “We can’t put ourselves in that situation. We’re at home and we need points and\u00a0I’m not sure what minute it was,\u00a0the 32nd minute, we’re playing with ten men.”<\/p>\n

The Galaxy played\u00a0without Ashley\u00a0Cole, Gyasi Zardes\u00a0and Robbie Rogers who are out with injuries. Cole and Zardes could play as early as next week while Rogers\u00a0is expected to be out\u00a0for an extended period. Midfielder\u00a0Jermaine Jones and\u00a0defender\u00a0Dave Romney also missed the game after being suspended for\u00a0one game by MLS.\u00a0Jones was disciplined or a foul committed last\u00a0week against FC Dallas while Romney was found guilty of embellishment also in the game versus Dallas.<\/p>\n

The Galaxy fell to 0-2 on the year with the loss.<\/p>\n
