You know you’re getting old\u00a0when\u00a0high school football players that you covered\u00a0are now taking head\u00a0coaching jobs.<\/p>\n

Riley Saxon, who played\u00a0quarterback\u00a0for Temple City in 2006 and Oscar Robles who was\u00a0behind center at Northview in 2008 have recently been named\u00a0head coaches.\u00a0Saxon took\u00a0over at his alma mater while Robles\u00a0took the reins at\u00a0Workman.\u00a0It’s kind of cool to see former players\u00a0continuing in the sport.\u00a0It’s going to take some young energy\u00a0to revive both of those\u00a0programs but that’s exactly what Saxon and Robles bring.<\/p>\n

I’d been hearing\u00a0 rumors about it since January and I almost expected it to happen after the 2015 season so I wasn’t surprised that\u00a0Marc Paramo stepped down as the head coach at Rosemead.\u00a0Paramo is going back to school and\u00a0focusing on his professional career\u00a0but\u00a0a lot of it is the same old story. Long hours, little pay and\u00a0not enough time for family.<\/p>\n

“I love Rosemead, I’m a Rosemead graduate and I’m\u00a0sure I’ll be back\u00a0here\u00a0coaching in some capacity one day. I’d even coach baseball or basketball if they asked,” Paramo said. “But right now I need some time away – maybe a year or two. I’m going back to\u00a0school\u00a0and\u00a0expanding what I can do professionally but I’m still on campus.”<\/p>\n

Names have already surfaced as to who Paramo’s replacement will be. Jude Oliva, who’s name pops up every time there is\u00a0coaching vacancy, is at the top of the list. That would be great\u00a0and I’m sure Oliva would have some interest. But there is one problem.\u00a0 Like a lot of head coaching jobs these days\u00a0there isn’t a teaching job\u00a0that comes with the position. With the calendar\u00a0marching swiftly towards April,\u00a0the Panthers don’t have a lot of time to make a decision.<\/p>\n

With Paramo’s resignation that leaves three teams in the MVL without head coaches.\u00a0There was talk that Marshall was going to fold the program\u00a0but the Eagles are still alive and kicking and have six candidates interested in the\u00a0HC position.<\/p>\n

Nothing at all new out of El Monte.\u00a0Eric MacIntyre, who was out after one year, is looking better and better with each passing day. The position has been flown but as of yet there’s simply not a lot of interest.<\/p>\n

Arroyo, the current King of the MVL and CIF\u00a0Division 12 for that matter,\u00a0has added to its staff.\u00a0Former\u00a0Monrovia star defensive lineman Ellis McCarthy is now on board as an assistant coach. McCarthy, who also played at UCLA,\u00a0will help out with the defensive line.<\/p>\n

“He’s really excited. Obviously he’s\u00a0knowledgeable. We’re excited about the future,”\u00a0said Arroyo HC Jim Singiser.<\/p>\n

The Knights did lose\u00a0assistant James Rivera\u00a0who left the staff and is\u00a0going to school to become a youth minister.<\/p>\n

From what I’m hearing Los Altos is close to\u00a0naming their head coach. The interviews have been conducted and\u00a0they’re honing in on one\u00a0candidate but as is always the case\u00a0in hiring a new\u00a0coach they’re waiting on one thing – board approval…stay tuned.<\/p>\n

Just\u00a0 a quick reminder –\u00a0the Pomona Red Devil Passing tournament is scheduled for Saturday June 3. There are still four spots available. Yes, it’s already that time of year.<\/p>\n

Are the Ball Brothers, specifically\u00a0father LaVar Ball, actually\u00a0a\u00a0curse for UCLA?\u00a0While Lonzo is great,\u00a0LaVar won’t shut his mouth and it makes you\u00a0wonder if he ultimately pushes Steve Alford out the door.\u00a0With the other two Balls still on the way,\u00a0and millions of dollars being offered from\u00a0Alford’s\u00a0 alma mater Indiana,\u00a0it wouldn’t be surprising to see him bolt\u00a0as soon as the tournament is over. Like Alford or not,\u00a0he’s guided the Bruins to the Sweet Sixteen\u00a0in three of his four years on the job.<\/p>\n

Did you know that\u00a0all five of\u00a0Pasadena’s starters\u00a0are back next year from a team that went to the Division II CIF State Finals? Yes Bryce Hamilton is only a junior. Last Friday night\u00a0the Esperanza\u00a0fans were chanting early in the game “Your not Kezie!”\u00a0at\u00a0Hamilton in reference\u00a0to their own star Kezie Okpala\u00a0who is headed to Stanford. But\u00a0 by the end of the\u00a0game, after Hamilton had scored 34 points, including 19 in the fourth quarter, those same fans knew.\u00a0No he’s not Kezie. He’s Bryce “Fricken” Hamilton.<\/p>\n
