There have been other hires as late as June. But with the football season a year round thing now if you don’t have a head coach in place by April 1, you may already be a step behind.

Word out of El Monte is that the position has been flown – a couple of different times – but there is simply no interest. Eric MacIntyre, who was one and done as the head coach of the Lions, is looking better with each passing day. Whether MacIntyre was asked to step down or did so voluntarily, wouldn’t El Monte be in better position with him at the helm? People seem to forget that the Lions made the playoffs last year and had a winning record. Heck by the time more interviews are conducted, resumes are reviewed and the board approves the hire it could be the middle of May. Most teams have already started the passing circuit by then. Maybe he would consider coming back. Just a thought.

**

Los Altos has everything but board approval. I know you’ve probably heard this before but the announcement of its new HC could come as soon as this week. The school just recently hired a new principal and that was their main focus. But with that out of the way the hiring of the football coach is imminent.

**

I was told last Friday night that South El Monte running back Sal Tovar, who will begin his senior year in September, has transferred to Cathedral and checked out of school last week. Fortunately for the Eagle faithful I was told shortly after that it was an April Fool’s joke.

**

Where does Rosemead go from here? Well Jude Oliva’s name has been thrown around as a replacement for Marc Paramo but then again Oliva’s name is mentioned every time there’s a coaching vacancy. It won’t be easy filling the position because it will more than likely be a walk on. Paramo is still on campus as a teacher. One prominent area assistant described the Rosemead job as “very interesting.”

El Monte and Rosemead make it three schools in the MVL with coaching vacancies. Marshall is still searching as well.

**

The San Gabriel job is open also. According to the CIF website it is available with a teaching position. Mr. Oliva?

**

Coaches get ripped for not making the playoffs and for early exits from the playoffs. They get accused of everything from playing favorites to playing kids in the wrong positions. And of course it’s their fault if a player isn’t making grades or throws an interception. But this week a comment on our site may have set a record for ignorance. Arroyo Coach Jim Singiser was accused of purposely self reporting a violation to CIF back in 2014 so he could be placed in a lower division. After Arroyo reported an ineligible player CIF forfeited three non league wins turning a 7-3 season into 4-6. The commenter (Ogie Oglethorpe), no they never use their real names, stated that the reason Singiser reported the player to CIF was that by forfeiting wins he could be placed in a lower division and have a better chance of winning a championship.

Now remember this was 2014- two years before the CIF realignment. So according to Oglethorpe, Singiser had the foresight (ESP?) to conjure up a scheme that the CIF would not only take away the three wins but then place the Knights in Division 12 – two years later – providing the perfect path to a CIF title. If this was the case Singiser is in the wrong profession. He should be a professional gambler in Las Vegas or take a job reading palms. He shouldn’t be a football coach, he should be on Wall Street predicting the stock market. The guy is pure genius! My question is why didn’t he tell CIF the player was involved in six games which may have led to a spot in Division 13?

Of course, according to Oglethorpe, there was no coaching involved when the Knights did indeed win the Division 12 title last year. All that was needed was a spot in a lower division and presto! Instant championship! A player gets suspended and the coach takes the heat because they say he’s a cheater. Now even if they self report a violation they get hammered because it’s self serving – but not self serving for immediate benefits, but benefits that will surely come two years later! My friends we’ve reached a new level of absurdity.

As we head into April and the spring passing leagues get underway I’m sure Singiser is sitting in his office scheming and conniving a way for the Knights to go 0-10 this year. Can you imagine the payoff in 2020?

That’s my principle.

Tim can be reached at tim@midvalleysports.com or on Twitter @tspeterson40.

By Tim Peterson It’s not unprecedented. Temple City hired a head coach in May one year.
