The announcement will be coming next week after board approval.

The hire doesn’t bring head coaching experience but he has worked as an assistant on the varsity level. Sometimes a fresh approach is the best. Stay tuned.

**

There is also news coming out of Schurr next week. It should break around Tuesday or Wednesday. Again, you know the deal…paper work, red tape, etc, etc. This one won’t require board approval though.

**

Diamond Bar got their man. Or should I say “men” as Kevin Argumosa came over in a package deal with Dale Ziola. The Brahmas have always been that team that seems like it could break though, get over that proverbial hump, with just some proper guidance and good coaching. They reached the playoffs in 2013 which was Ryan Maine’s last year. But the last three seasons have been forgettable. Argumosa and Ziola know how to win. They took Los Altos to two CIF Finals appearances in six years. Diamond Bar got better last week.

**

Great to see that Marshall has a head coach in place and is keeping its football program intact. The post was met with sarcasm from our loyal readers but keep in mind, Marshall is a Mission Valley League team and its a team that’s coming off a 6-4 season which included a couple of big wins in league. It’s never good for the local football landscape when a school drops its program, although at times it may seem necessary, so the fact that Marshall is back is good news.

**

Just when you thought we had seen all of the coaching changes, at least as far as the resignations are concerned, Jesse Ceniceros and Chino happen. We heard the standard diatribe, need to spend time with family, just thought it was time, etc…but we all know the bottom line. Coaches are burned out. It’s a twelve month a year gig, there is no time off. Combine that with disgruntled parents, lack of support from administration and 13 hour days and it’s a recipe to crash and burn. It’s actually surprising that more coaches don’t resign.

**

Speaking of burn out there’s nothing new out of El Monte. I’ve heard several names floated since Joshua Knight turned it down however still nothing concrete. Note to El Monte administration: May begins Monday.

**

Maybe the funniest comment I’ve seen on the boards, although there are many to chose from, popped up last week. “Zernickow is headed to San Gabriel.” The day Bill Zernickow takes over at San Gabriel is the day I’m the starting nose tackle for the Green Bay Packers. While I’m at it – Note to San Gabriel administration: May begins Monday.

**

If I walked a mile in the shoes of a Los Altos fan I can see the disappointment in hiring Hector Spathias. I’ve just had six years of Ziola and company. I’m getting used to beating Charter Oak and competing for a CIF championship every year. Now I get a guy that used to coach at Bassett? I mean, seriously Bassett? But let’s take a step back and see what he did Bassett.

He took a moribund program and completely turned it around. In 2011, before Spathias took over, the Olympians went 1-9 under Aubrey Duncan. In Spathias’ first year Basset went 3-7 and finished 5-5 the following year. By 2014 Spathias had the Olympians in the playoffs where they fell to Paraclete in the first round. Bassett then went 6-5 in 2015, again made the playoffs and lost to San Dimas in round one. Bassett in the playoffs for consecutive years? One would have thought the apocalypse was upon us.

Spathias was then dismissed before the 2016 campaign for an “incident” which was never fully disclosed and last year of course Bassett went…you guessed it…again, 1-9. Under Spathias Bassett was a playoff team. The Olympians were relevant again. They hadn’t been relevant in more than a decade. Hector Spathais can coach. The Los Altos faithful needs to give this guy a shot.

**

In the NFL you need a quarterback to win, but the Chicago Bears had a quarterback. They just signed Mike Glennon to a three-year, $45 million deal last month. Yet they traded up one spot, from three to two, to draft North Carolina quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. The Bears gave up three draft picks, two thirds and a fourth to San Francisco, for a quarterback that started all of 13 games in college. So many questions here. Were the 49ers even going to pick Trubisky? Why not just take a chance that he would still be there at three and if he’s not just draft another quarterback. Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson were still out there. And If not you still have Glennon. Desperate times call for desperate measures I guess but in the Bears case it’s turned them delusional.

While the Bears may have screwed up Watson may have found the perfect landing spot in Houston.

Takkarist McKinley needs to bring it down a few notches. The best part of the draft was seeing Deion Sanders tell McKinley that he needs to “harness” his emotions.

The 49ers not only got Stanford defensive end Solomon Thomas with the third pick but also landed Rueben Foster, (LB, Alabama) at number 31 in the first round which may have been the best value pick of the draft.

USC had just one player selected in the first round, CB Adoree Jackson by Tennessee 18, as did UCLA, McKinley by Atlanta at 26.

Have the Rams drafted yet?

**

Break up the Clippers! No I mean seriously, break up the Clippers!

That’s my principle.

Tim can be reached at tim@midvalleysports.com or on Twitter @tspeterson40.

By Tim Peterson Rosemead has filled its head coaching position.
