I ran into Aaron “Airshow” Cantu at the 605 All-Star game Saturday night and I have this to report on the\u00a0San Gabriel head coaching\u00a0position.<\/p>\n

No he’s not taking the job.\u00a0No he’s not interested and no\u00a0he never was interested. He never\u00a0inquired about the job or has made any mention of it. It was a just a bad rumor gone haywire.\u00a0You know how the blogs are.<\/p>\n

So Cantu is out but who’s in? I\u00a0wish I had the answer.\u00a0I am hearing however\u00a0that it’s not the team as much as the administration. There’s a lot of\u00a0schools that need a rebuild\u00a0when it comes to football. Coaches can handle that.\u00a0Heck,\u00a0most of them\u00a0enjoy the challenge.\u00a0They embrace it. But when the admin is tough to work for that’s a whole different matter.<\/p>\n

“The AD talked to me about\u00a0it but I told them there’s\u00a0no way I could work there, not with that administration,”\u00a0one\u00a0assistant told me.<\/p>\n

Another source told me that they have had to start the process\u00a0all over from scratch because every potential candidate has turned it down.\u00a0Frank Alonzo’s name surfaced recently\u00a0as well. That was just another bad rumor.<\/p>\n

What’s the over-under on the Matadors having a coach in place by the Fourth of July?<\/p>\n

South El Monte plans to throw the ball a lot more this year.\u00a0They\u00a0won’t be “Air Coryell”\u00a0circa 1983 but the Eagles will be putting the ball up.<\/p>\n

“When we played Rancho Christian last year in the semi finals\u00a0they stacked the box and shut us down,”\u00a0said South El Monte\u00a0HC\u00a0Frank Gallardo Saturday at the One Blood Tournament at Mt. View. “A lot of teams can do that. We realize that we need to have a more balanced attack.\u00a0Daniel (quarterback Daniel Olmos)\u00a0is going to have\u00a0a chance to throw it.\u00a0He just needs to make his reads.”<\/p>\n

“We lost some key players\u00a0up front on the offensive line. So yes we’re going to throw\u00a0it more,”\u00a0said O-Line Coach Mike Mooney.<\/p>\n

Of course South\u00a0still has\u00a0running back Sal Tovar,\u00a02801 yards rushing,\u00a039 touchdowns last year,\u00a0and he’ll still be a key part of the offense\u00a0but he just won’t be the whole offense.<\/p>\n

Olmos\u00a0was gearing up Saturday.<\/p>\n

Montebello quarterback Gabriel Tapia\u00a0looked bigger and stronger and was firing bullets Saturday as the Oilers\u00a0went 6-1 overall. They advanced all the way to the\u00a0semi finals before\u00a0falling to eventual champion Crescenta Valley.<\/p>\n

“He’s been working hard all off season\u00a0to get better. He’s been really looking good,” said Montebello OC Pete Gonzalez Jr.<\/p>\n

Can anybody unseat Montebello in the Almont?<\/p>\n

Speaking of Crescenta Valley, now\u00a0opponents don’t have just the high powered offense to worry about,\u00a0the\u00a0Falcons have the big boys up front as well.\u00a0CV won the One Blood linemen Comp Saturday\u00a0outlifting all\u00a0of the other teams and\u00a0beating Long Beach Jordan and Los Altos in the championship round.<\/p>\n

“I’m thrilled.\u00a0We just won the lineman competition,” said CV HC Paul Schilling\u00a0Saturday as he was watching his Falcons\u00a0go 7-on 7, which they also won.<\/p>\n

I’m going out on a limb now and saying Crescenta Valley wins the Pacific.<\/p>\n

So the question is do we cover Cantwell or not?\u00a0It’s not like it’s not local.\u00a0The school is right there in Montebello. Coach Travis Brown has been busy this offseason\u00a0getting the Cardinals ready.\u00a0It seems like they’ve\u00a0been at every passing tournament I’ve attended.\u00a0Brown has his work cut out\u00a0as the Cards\u00a0try to rebound\u00a0from a 3-7 season. But if they’re competitive\u00a0why not? We’ll try to fit them into our schedule.<\/p>\n

Covina quarterback Nin Burns’\u00a0father played at Covina in the eighties.\u00a0Burns II, a sophomore,\u00a0will take over full time as\u00a0the Colts starter this season.\u00a0Last year he threw for 707 yards as a backup to Anthony Meneses who has since graduated.<\/p>\n

It seemed weird seeing Kevin Argumosa\u00a0and Dale Ziola\u00a0in Diamond Bar gear.<\/p>\n

**<\/p>\n

Gotta love the One Blood Tournament. Mt. View HC\u00a0Victor Ambruso and staff do a great job of putting the\u00a0whole thing together.\u00a0Best tacos\u00a0on the passing circuit.<\/p>\n

**<\/p>\n

Northview quarterback Steven Comstock and several of his teammates\u00a0were out for most of the day taking\u00a0the SAT exam but they returned after lunch and the Vikings still managed\u00a0to advance to the championship game where they fell to Crescenta Valley.\u00a0I’m going out on another limb and taking Northview in the Valle Vista.<\/p>\n

San Dimas got knocked out early after starting the tourney 1-3. But when was the last time the Saints relied on a passing attack? “Remember\u00a0Tim, when you pass the ball three things can happen and two of them are bad,”\u00a0said San Dimas assistant Marc Shettleroe.\u00a0Shettleroe landed at San Dimas after leaving as the HC in\u00a0Temple City after last season.<\/p>\n

**<\/p>\n

I wasn’t at the Red Devils Shootout in Pomona but I did get the information that\u00a0Cathedral won.\u00a0The Phantoms were\u00a0pretty impressive knocking off\u00a0Oaks Christian in the process. So I posted it.\u00a0Let the fireworks\u00a0begin.<\/p>\n
