You wanna hear them? Here they are. “1. Philip Rivers 2. Sam Darnold 3. Josh Rosen 4. Jared Goff.”

5. Ouch! At least Goff was ahead of Sean Mannion. For now…

Rivers may be the best quarterback in LA and he’s definitely the best interview. When he spoke to the media last Sunday after the Chargers first day of camp he talked about his passion for football, his expectations for a new season, and the joy that his kids brought him. He’s well spoken and well versed in the sport. He talked about how there were 12 people at one of his first Charger practices as a rookie and compared to the capacity crowd of over 5,000 that cheered him on in Costa Mesa. Just a great interview and still the man that could lead the Chargers back to prominence.

**

It’s heartbreaking to see a players’ season abruptly come to an end even before the first exhibition game has been played. Chargers right guard Forrest Lamp was lost for the year with an ACL injury on Wednesday in a non contact drill. Lamp never missed a game in his four years at Western Kentucky. Rams defensive tackle end Dominique Easley suffered a similar fate and was carted off the field. He’s also out for the season. Everybody knows injuries are part of the game, but man those ones sting.

**

Also speaking of media at Chargers camp, has there even been a more impeccably dressed, more professional, more dignified local sports reporter than Jim Hill of CBS? Did you know that Hill turned 70 last October. Of all the “sports guys” out there with microphones Hill stood out by far as the most respected. It wasn’t even close.

**

You forget how important football is, how big a part of people’s lives it plays, how it just sticks in your soul, until you see a Hall of Fame speech. You sit there and watch and listen to an inductee’s speech and realize how the sport has touched his family, friends, and loved ones, how it has literally shaped their life and made them the person they are today. We can talk about CTE until we’re blue in the face but what percentage of former NFL players if they had to do it all over again would decide not to play? I’ll take the under on two percent.

Kurt Warner and LaDainian Tomlinson knocked it out of the park Saturday night in Canton, Ohio. Jerry Jones was okay, probably deserves to get in, but an owner’s speech just doesn’t do it for me.

**

Has anybody else looked at the calendar, did a double take and realized that the high school football season is less than three weeks away? Is there a Mid Valley preview coming soon? Well, no. But doesn’t that information change in the first two weeks anyway? Don’t worry we’re not going anywhere. We’ll still look at a couple more leagues before the opening kick off and we’ll be all over it come Friday nights (and Thursday nights).

I’m sure (no pun intended) that Schurr is going to be good this year. Not just good but very very good. The more I hear and read and see, the more the Spartans are bringing to the table. They can make a run. I’m schurr of it…

**

I’m not a big track and field guy but it’s sad to see the Usain Bolt era come to an end.

**

The best 50 game run (43-7) in baseball since 1912. Cody Bellinger. Kyle Farmer. The acquisition of Yu Darvish. Chris Taylor. 46 games above .500. 14.5 games ahead of Arizona in the National League West. 30 comeback wins. The list goes on and on for this magical season. So it has to be that these 2017 Dodgers are a team of d…nope. Sorry, just can’t say it.

**

The future looks bleaker by the day for Colin Kaepernick.

That’s my principle.

Tim can be reached at tim@midvalleysports.com or on Twitter @tspeterson40.

By Tim Peterson Overheard at Los Angeles Chargers camp last weekend by a known sports radio personality. “We’re going to do a segment on the four best quarterbacks in LA.
