Yeah I had El Monte over Baldwin Park, but the Lions did pick up some yards on the ground. If Jesse Ceniceros’ crew could have avoided the fumbles, they might have pulled it off. But where did I really biff it? That would be taking Monrovia over Burbank.

I thought Maury Rams would have a break out game. I thought Michael Washington’s speed would be too much for Burbank. I thought Trevor McPherson would air it out and the Wildcats offense would have a field day. I thought…I thought…I thought. I biffed it. Credit to Adam Colman for a victory in his head coaching debut. Credit to the Burbank program for not only coming out to play in the opener after losing a ton of players to graduation but also for the success of last season as well. Did anybody else overlook the Bulldogs? Do you know that Burbank has outscored Monrovia 56-15 in the last two years? So who do I like in the Pacific? Well, Crescenta Valley of course. But I might live to regret that one.

Speaking of the Pacific, nice win for Arcadia over La Salle in Zero Week. We’ll find out a lot more about the Apaches this week when they host Cathedral. If Arcadia wins that one then we got a story. Can Pasadena compete? The Dogs did hold their own against Buena Park last week but we know the Coyotes aren’t the same team with Anthony White at home watching the NFL Channel. We’ll see.

**

Gladstone! Yeah G-Stone snapped a 14 game losing streak dating back to October 9, 2015 with a 15-7 win over Wilson. Second year Head Coach Ted Clarke likes what he sees. “Better days ahead,” Clarke said. The Gladiators travel to Ganesha this week looking for their second straight.

**

“This book has been such a breath of fresh air. The offense will be more than Sal Tovar right, Tovar left and Tovar up the middle. Well Tovar did his thing with 104 yards in a 24-7 win over Alhambra but quarterback Daniel Olmos threw for 88 and ran for 64 so yes, they’re more versatile…a little.

**

We get a lot of funny (dumb?) comments are on our board but one I saw this week really jumped out. A La Serna fan was upset that we didn’t cover the Lancers last Saturday night instead of the Smudge Pot. have you seen the size of the crowds at the Smudge Pot? Isn’t the Smudge Pot one of the biggest games of the year? San Dimas-Bonita has to be the biggest rivalry right? I welcome all rebuttals but I’ve seen the passion and the energy that the fans bring to this game. His point was that La Serna would beat both San Dimas and Bonita so we should have been at the Lancers game. Okay, I guess, but the Lancers lost Saturday night to La Costa 34-7. And why were we supposed to skip the Smudge Pot again?

**

Colman wasn’t the only former quarterback to win his head coaching debut at his alma mater. Riley Saxon, former Temple City quarterback and assistant coach, also came out a victor in his first game as head coach as his Rams beat Pasadena Poly 21-7. Saxon, a Temple City guy through and through, and a teacher on campus, may be just the guy to get the Temple City football program back on track. Congrats Coach. Nice win. Arroyo awaits.

**

Hoover’s football game with Sotomayor this Friday night was canceled because Sotomayor is observing a four-day Labor Weekend.
