South Hills Takes home the King of Cameron Trophy<\/p><\/div>\n

(West Covina) –\u00a0 The South Hills Huskies were officially coronated as the 2017 \u201cKing of Cameron\u201d, defeating the host West Covina Bulldogs, 47-0, Friday evening.<\/p>\n

West Covina, 0-3, put their three-year winning streak in this annual rivalry game on the line. The Bulldogs had been victorious in 2014 (winning 44-0), 2015 (27-7), and 2016 (35-8). However, a fourth consecutive victory was not to take place. South Hills, 3-0, scored early and often, en route to their dominating victory.<\/p>\n

The evening started off on a solemn note, as West Covina paid tribute to Lance Corporal Ruben Velasco. Velasco, who graduated from West Covina in 2016, was killed in a plane crash, while serving in the United States Marine Corp. The tribute included the school\u2019s presentation of Velasco\u2019s #28 jersey to his family. The tribute also included the presentation of colors by a uniformed Color Guard, as well as a moment of silence. Semper Fi, Marine\u2026and thank you for your service.<\/p>\n

On the field, the evening belonged to the Huskies. Specifically, the evening belonged to South Hills quarterback R.J. Stearns. Stearns completed 8 of 12 passes for 176 yards and three touchdowns; connecting with running back Ryan Torres for an 18 yard score,<\/p>\n

SB Joseph Ruelas on a 33 yard touchdown completion, and running back Zion Naulls for a 66 yard score. Stearns also contributed on the ground\u2026rushing for 68 yards and two touchdowns. The balance of the evening\u2019s scoring was provided by Naulls, who scored on a 56 yard run, and by relief quarterback Khalil Ali, who connected with Christian Miller for the game\u2019s final score.<\/p>\n

South Hills also dominated defensively, recording four sacks and an interception.<\/p>\n

South Hills next game is scheduled for September 22 when the Huskies will travel to Charter Oak High School to play the Chargers. West Covina\u2019s next contest is Friday night as the Bulldogs travel to Schurr to battle the Spartans.
