Cajon got screwed.

Remember back in the day when Magic would dish to James Worthy for two, Byron Scott would knock down a deep three, a steal would lead to another three by Michael Cooper and suddenly the “Showtime” Lakers were on a 20-2 run? Chick Hearn would yell “Time out Boston!” Well, Cajon is kind of like that.

One minute, Cajon was trailing Downey 14-13, the next Cajon was up 34-14. Early in the second half, Downey cut the lead to 34-28, minutes later it was 54-28 Cajon. The only thing missing was Chick barking “Time out, Vikings!” Twice Cajon went on quick three touchdown runs that just buried Downey in the Division 4 championship game. Speed, defense, athletes, Cajon has the whole package. Alabama looks boring by comparison.

The Cowboys hit Downey for 54, and dropped 70 last night on Rancho Verde in the State Bowl. Quarterback Jayden Daniels is going to make a Division 1 College Offensive Coordinator very happy in a couple of years. Only a junior…

**

Overheard on the sidelines Saturday night regarding Downey quarterback Kijjon Foots. “Foots? Wait, shouldn’t it be feet?”

**

If Covina could have just made one stop, one!, it would have won the CIF title. Shame to see the Colts score 106 points in two games but still fall six short. But that being said it was a great run for Nin Burns II, Erik Cuellar and company. You want great quotes? Forget putting a recorder in front of a coach after the game and asking him to explain his thoughts. Just listen to him address his team.

Covina HC Joe Brown summed it up best. “I love each and every one of you. You got me my first league championship, you got me to my first CIF Championship and I will never forget each and every one of you. And I will take that to the grave. I know it hurts guys. We’re all hurting but it wasn’t a lack of effort or lack of desire.” Good stuff.

**

At first glance it looks like we failed miserably on our CIF Finals picks. We actually ended up 2-3 with El Modena and Paraclete winning. And c’mon, Covina loses on a last minute touchdown and St. Francis gets beat on a last second field goal! 4-1 was a real possibility. I can just see the comments now… coulda, shoulda, woulda…

**

There was an argument on Twitter this week about who the MVP of the Valle Vista League should be. If it’s not Northview quarterback Steven Comstock there shouldn’t be an award. There were some great players in the Valle Vista in 2017, Burns, Cuellar, etc. but Comstock was the MVP – in the true meaning of the word.

**

Ran into Northview HC Marcel Perez at the Covina-Katella Final. The difference between his Vikings and first round opponent Millikan? “It was the depth. All of their guys just go one way. They were fresh,” Perez said. “Most of our guys play on both sides of the ball. In fact we’ve already been talking about how going forward we need to coach our guys to play just one way if we’re going to compete in this division. Maybe we as coaches need to work harder.” In case you forgot Northview beat Covina 42-28 on October 13.

**

It didn’t take long for the first shoe to drop. Keith Richardson is out at Pomona. Wasn’t it just last year that people were heaping praise on Richardson for taking over in the post season and leading the Red Devils to a CIF Championship? Actually it was 2014 that Pomona completed its title run with a win over Paraclete but that’s how fast things can change. I don’t know the exact reason for Richardson’s dismissal but it wasn’t simply a matter of wins and losses.

**

Did you know that San Dimas head coach Mark Holman and Katella HC Fred DiPalma are neighbors? “I love Fred, just a great guy,” Holman said.

Holman and I were both still trying to figure out how Dylan Ware didn’t get into the end zone against Kaiser on the two point conversion. It’s still a mystery.

**

Montebello’s non-league schedule is already set for 2018. at Garfield, Cantwell, Crescenta Valley, El Rancho, at La Serna. I like it.

**

All things must pass as George Harrison once said. And so it was this week at Mid Valley Sports when Sports Editor/Columnist/Writer Joe Torosian stepped down to pursue other opportunities. Joe was the pioneer in starting sports at the “Mid” from the early days back to the Mid Valley News. When he first walked into then editor Connie Keenan’s office back in 1998 sports was non existent in the paper. Connie, based on her previous experience with so called “sportswriters” thought he wouldn’t last a week. Here it is nearly 20 years later and MVS is still thriving on the internet.

Joe was the brains behind regular features that you see on the site today such as “The TEN” and “Game Night.” He had readers anxiously awaiting to see what he would come up with next in his weekly “Fanview” column. He was also instrumental in our weekly “Mid Valley Sports Show” that ran on Tuesday nights for several years. He helped countless writers that passed through our office improve their skills – not because he wanted more coverage for the “Mid” but simply because he wanted to see them move on to bigger and better things, which several of them did.

He gave me an opportunity and brought me in 1999 because he knew I had an interest in sports writing and later encouraged me to write a weekly column which I still write today. For that I will be forever grateful. So I’ll overlook his annoying love of the Mets to say thanks Joe for all you did at the “Mid” and for what you did for me and the rest of the staff. It’s been a great run. Good luck in all of your future endeavors and projects. Oh, and I’ll need you to send me all of your high school football history information ASAP.

**

Jayden Daniels just scored again. Time out!
