Compton Centennial's Kevin Smith throws one down for the East <\/p><\/div>\n

Boys: East 103 West 92\u00a0<\/p>\n

Kevin Smith of Compton Centennial scored 24 points, most of which came as he was flying above the rim, to win MVP honors as the East beat the West 103-92 Friday night in the 110 All-Star game at Whittier College.<\/p>\n

Smith scored 20 of those points in the first half as the East took a 49-44 lead at the break. The East raced out to a 13-1 run to open the second half and cruised the rest of the way. Smith threw down several thunderous dunks off of alley oop plays and break aways.<\/p>\n

Fellow running mate Kurt Davis, also of Compton Centennial, poured in 25 to lead all scorers including 18 in the second half.<\/p>\n

David Hall of Lynwood, a guest on the Mid Valley Sports Show last Tuesday night, scored eight points and Andrew Torres, who hails from nearby Montebello, tossed in four. Guard Manny Garcia of Bosco did a good job of driving to the basket scoring 15 points.<\/p>\n

For the West, Chaminade\u2019s Jamaal McClerkin scored 19 and Emmanuel Andino of St. Anthony, who resembled a young Charles Barkley, muscled his way to 13.<\/p>\n

Smith will be doing his thing on the gridiron this fall. He is attending the University of Washington on a football scholarship.<\/p>\n

Girls: West 62 East 59 OT<\/p>\n

Cassie Pappas of Crescenta Valley scored 13 points, including three clutch free throws in overtime to lead the East to a 62-59 win over the West. Pappas took home the MVP award for her efforts.<\/p>\n

The West fell behind by ten early on the contest but battled back to trail by just four, 23-19 at halftime. A 9-0 run to open the second half put the West up by five. There were several lead changes the rest of the way.<\/p>\n

Hilary Drinovsky of Long Beach Millikan scored a basket underneath for the East with 1.4 left in regulation to tie it at 59 and send it into overtime.<\/p>\n

Neither side scored a field goal the two minute session but Pappas did knock down three fret hors to give the West the victory.<\/p>\n

Brentwood\u2019s Laura Kobashigawa was also in double figures for the West with 14 points including a three point bomb. Skyy Lewis of Taft added seven.<\/p>\n

For the East, Drinovsky scored seven and Rina Towne of St. Anthony tossed in eight. Desiree Hunter of Magnolia also had eight with six coming in the second half.<\/p>\n
