Adrian Calvio helped keep the Knights at the top of the MVL.<\/p><\/div>\n

(El Monte) The Arroyo Knights and the South El Monte Eagles collided Friday night at the Swamp in a key Mission Valley League matchup. Although a high scoring contest was anticipated, the Knights escaped with a 17-10 victory.<\/p>\n

The underdog Eagles got on the board first with just under four minutes gone in the opening stanza. South El Monte capitalized on a Adrian Camacho fumble that set them up at Arroyo 23. After stalling out on four plays at the Knight four, Gaspar Beltran came on to boot a 21-yard field goal and the 3-0 lead.<\/p>\n

Arroyo came back to take the lead on their very next possession. Ernesto Camacho called his own number from 2-yards away. Ramiro Piza nailed the extra point for the 7-3 advantage.<\/p>\n

Marco Montoya was the workhorse for the Eagles.<\/p><\/div>\n

Early in the second quarter, the Eagles took the lead back marching 80-yards on 14 plays with Marco Montoya scoring on a 2-yard run. Montoya finished the night gaining 40-yards on 15 carries and the lone score.<\/p>\n

The Knight defense stepped up to regain the lead for Arroyo. James Le hauled in a tipped pass from Mario Zamudio and raced 42-yards for the the score. <\/p>\n

Arroyo had a chance late in the half to extend their lead after marching down to the South El Monte 13. Piza’s field goal sailed wide left and the Knights would have to settle for a four point lead, 14-10 at the half.<\/p>\n

Neither team had much success in the third quarter and the score remained the same to start the fourth.<\/p>\n

The Knights got the final score on the night with 10:46 left in the game. A nine play drive stalled at the Eagle six but this time Piza hit the 22-yard field goal.<\/p>\n

The teams traded possessions and with time winding down, Camacho’s punt pinned the Eagles at their own one. South El Monte managed to get out of the shadow of their own goal posts on the first two plays of the drive. However, the third play was a disaster as Zamudios next pass was picked off at his own one by the Knight’s Dylan Leonardis to seal the victory.<\/p>\n

Leading the way for the Knights were Adrian Calvio who had 85-yards rushing and 76-yards receiving on nine catches and Camacho who completed 16 of 28 for 163 and added 63 rushing yards and the two scores.<\/p>\n

Next week Arroyo will take on El Monte in a highly anticipated MVL matchup while South El Monte will travel to Rosemead to take on the Panthers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
