The Lakers or the Clippers? The Clips are used to Ls. It’s been the history of their franchise. Seriously, what’s one more? The Clippers didn’t get Kawhi Leonard…okay, ho hum. But if the Lakers come up short? The most storied franchise in NBA history fails to land the prime free agent? Especially after they gutted their roster to get it done. And especially if he does sign with the other tenants in the building… It’s got to be the Lakers right?

**

Northview, who went 10-0 in the regular season last year, might be even better in 2019. The Vikings are tearing up the passing league led by returning quarterback James Jimenez. Did anybody else think he was a senior last year? I saw him throwing at the SGV Shootout and I thought “Oh yeah, that’s right, he’s back.” Damion Thompson and Deshon Thompson are also back giving Northview a deadly offensive attack. Head coach Marcel Perez must be living right having Steven Comstock for four years followed by Jimenez. You got to love the Vikes non league schedule as well…Monrovia, El Rancho, San Marino, at West Covina, Don Lugo, at Los Altos.

So former Covina quarterback Nin Burns II is playing cornerback and receiver for Diamond Ranch but he hasn’t officially transferred there yet…okay…

When he does officially transfer would an appropriate headline be “Covina Gets Burned!”… too soon?

There was some discussion on Twitter the other day about fights at passing leagues and the consensus was that there weren’t any at the Bonita Air Assault. There actually was one late Saturday afternoon. It was minor… just two players (corner and receiver) competing and it was quickly broken up by the coaches. Wasn’t really a big deal…basically nothing to see here. But for the record, it was a fight.

Former local coaches Joe Brown (Covina HC) and Brian Zavala (Montebello DC) are on Darryl Thomas’ staff at Upland. Speaking of Upland, have you seen those guys? Do they serve bigger steaks out there? “Yeah we have some big boys” Zavala said.

I wouldn’t worry about Covina without Brown and Burns. They’re significant losses, no doubt. But with new head coach Dale Ziola, the Colts will be ready to go. Ziola liked the way his team was playing at the SGV Shootout. “I can’t remember the last time I was 3-0 in pool play,” he said at the break.

I said this last year too but I like what San Gabriel is doing. Head coach Kevin Encinas has great energy and the numbers are starting to come around. The Matadors lost by one score to Upland at Bonita. But yeah I know, it’s only passing league.

A starting quarterback had to miss the SGV Shootout because he was required to attend a summer basketball league game. Look, I’m sure it will help the kid improve and the football coach even encouraged him to go but I just can’t get into summer basketball. Especially when you’re the starting quarterback. Plus, isn’t the football season first? August 22 is just seven weeks away.

The Bonita football field is supposed to be completed in time for the start of the season.

Just heard that Felipe Aguilar stepped down as the head baseball coach at Rowland. Maybe he’ll want to jump back into football. There’s still a couple of jobs open here on the Fourth of July. Azusa? Wilson? Bosco Tech? They know it’s July right?

Doesn’t it seem like Culver City is either in the semis or the finals of every local passing league tournament over the past three years?

I was told by a local coach to look out for Gladstone this year. Just telling you what I heard…

What’s the coolest name for a Summer League passing tournament? The Rumble at the Ranch, The SGV Shootout or the Bonita Air Assault?

St. Paul DC Donald Bernard still thinks it’s funny that I got decleated at the All-Star game at Arcadia in May. He sent me pictures taken right after the hit that showed me looking like a punch-drunk fighter. He doesn’t even seem to mind that I suffered a lacerated kidney. Well, it wasn’t lacerated but it felt like it. And it wasn’t actually my kidney I don’t think but my arm was killing me. Plus lacerated kidney sounds cooler so don’t let him know.

**

Just saw Cody Bellinger hit one to Monrovia.

**

Prayers to Charter Oak Head Coach Lou Farrar and his family as he was recently diagnosed with leukemia. Another tough opponent that Big Lou is ready to conquer.

That’s my principle.

Tim can be reached at tim.midvalleysports@gmail.com or on Twitter @tspeterson40

By Tim Peterson While waiting for Kawhi Leonard to make his decision I was thinking…If Leonard signs today is it known as the Fourth of Kawhi?

[12817

post-66960","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-petersonprince
["GET
