The Falcons proved that again in the opener with a 37-0 rout of Santa Fe. The Oilers hung with San Dimas until the Saints were able to ice it late. Montebello has had a tough schedule. This is the third straight week the Oilers have played a top notch opponent. They’ll have to be at their best again to beat CV. Again they’ll battle but the Falcons will prevail.

Crescenta Valley 34 Montebello 17

Friday September 6

El Monte (2-0) at San Marino (0-2)

Last Year: San Marino 76-36

I’m getting the feeling this year will be different than last year. The Lions have annihilated their two opponents, although they weren’t exactly Mater Dei and St. John Bosco, while San Marino was taken out behind the woodshed by Charter Oak and Northview. This won’t be another walk over for El Monte. San Marino isn’t the same team as last season and the Titans are still trying to find their way without head coach Mike Hobbie, but they can still play. At times they’ll give El Monte fits. They may even take a lead. In the end it won’t be easy but the Lions get their third straight win. Davon Booth is hard to catch.

El Monte 35 San Marino 21

Glendora (2-0) at Charter Oak (2-0)

Last Year: Glendora 21-7

Is it safe to say Charter Oak is back? The Chargers are 2-0 including a quality win last week over Colony. They might be but Glendora is the real deal. The Tartans have outscored Damien and Roosevelt, two solid opponents, by the combined score of 58-14. This could be the game of the week. Charter Oak should come out firing and may grab an early lead. Glendora has enough though to overcome and fight through it. Tartans get the victory.

Glendora 28 Charter Oak 21

La Puente (1-1) at Rosemead (2-0)

Last Year: Rosemead 16-7

Don’t look now but Rosemead is 2-0. The Panthers may have some trouble when they hit league but right now they’re going to have some fun. La Puente is coming off a loss to Pioneer. The Warriors will come up short again here. Panthers win a close one.

Rosemead 21 La Puente 17

Monrovia (2-0) at Los Altos (2-0)

It’s way too early in the season to say this but I’ll do it anyway. It’s the battle of the unbeatens! Neither team has embarked on a death march but they’re both 2-0. Los Altos dispatched Covina and Wilson while Monrovia has knocked off West Covina and Alta Loma. The Wildcats win last week was solid especially after Alta Loma beat them last year. Devon Mayes has speed to burn and quarterback Nick Hernandez has been lighting it up through the air. Los Altos looked good in the summer and it has carried over into the season. Rene Zaldivar is doing everything except selling chili dogs in the snack bar. On paper it looks like a shootout. Both offenses can light it up. Monrovia, with a wealth of talent at the skill positions, should take care of business. The Cats hold off Los Altos late.

Monrovia 34 Los Altos 31

Northview (2-0) at West Covina (0-2)

Last Year: Northview 51-6

Let’s not go into a long analysis about how this one turns out. There’s no need. The question isn’t whether Northview wins but it’s by how much. Three touchdowns? Four? 40 points? The Vikings beat WestCo by 45 last year and not much has changed since then. Northview might be better. Thompson scores at will – both of them- James Jimenez racks up a ton of yards and Marcel Perez needs to come up with a good halftime speech. Vikings…big.

Northview 48 West Covina 7

Schurr (1-1) at Arroyo (1-1)

Last Year: Arroyo 56-16

Arroyo got well last week against Nogales while Schurr also got off the floor with a big win over Morningside. Both teams are playoff contenders although the Spartans are still a little young as they to regroup from last season. Arroyo gets out in front and Schurr simply won’t be able to catch up. Arroyo still loves to throw the ball around the lot. Knights come out on top.

Arroyo 35 Schurr 17

St. Francis (1-0) at Damien (1-1)

Last Year: St. Francis 38-21

Damien fell in the season opener to Glendora but bounced back last week with a win over Claremont. St. Francis is not Claremont. The Golden Knights took care of Mira Costa last week and as always are a contender in the Angelus League. It could go either way. With new head coach Matt Bechtel at the helm the Spartans will always come to fight.
