\nI’m writing this column on my mobile device because my laptop took a dump. Why, of course it did. It’s 2020.<\/p>\n

Kobe dies in a helicoptor crash, a virus known as COVID-19 spreads throughout the land and the next thing you know sports, and the world as we know it comes to a screeching halt. Not enough? No not even close.<\/p>\n

A bad cop in Minnesota kills a black man for no reason which results in protests nation wide, looting and rioting in the streets and ultimately violence against police and protesters alike. <\/p>\n

Anybody in our lifetime ever seen anything like this? Well there’s more. Millions are now filing unemployment claims and hundreds of businesses and restaurants which were forced to shut down because of the virus, are now closing down permanently. <\/p>\n

Hey, I’ll be honest I’m going to miss Soup Plantation. And if Taco Treat doesn’t open soon we got a problem.<\/p>\n

Anything else that 2020 can hit us with? Well yeah, have you been attacked yet by murder hornets? Yeah that’s what they’re called. Murder hornets. Sounds like a nickname for a junior college in the mid west. What are they exactly? I don’t know but I really don’t want to find out. No investigative reporting here on that one. <\/p>\n

2020 is only half way through. Just last week there were reports that another virus has been detected that is 10 times worse than the previous one. Fantastic. Just what we all need. What’s next? Alien abductions?<\/p>\n

So what do we do when it comes to sports? Baseball has a start date but with players testing positive left and right and others opting out one has to wonder if they will make it through the season if it gets underway at all? Buster Olney of ESPN says the chances are zero percent. NBA and MLS are both in an Orlando, Florida bubble but COVID-19 tests are still coming up positive. One MLS team, Nashville, already dropped out of the MLS is Back Tournament and games this past week have already been postponed. Not good. <\/p>\n

NFL training camps open later this month or do they? A ton of restrictions and precautions need to be put in place before the players arrive. Is the NFL prepared for that? Let’s be honest here, there’s no social distancing in football. <\/p>\n

On the high school level CIF will announce its decision for a Fall sports schedule on July 20. But it doesn’t end there. As one former local high school coach\/ AD told me it has nothing to do with the CIF. It’s up to the schools. And when it comes to football, in his opinion, the schools won’t want to take the risk of playing. Even if CIF approves a football season beginning in the Fall the schools can say no, we’re not doing it. When the Junior colleges in California announced this past week that all sports were done for 2020 and will resume in January, in his opinion it was game, set, match. <\/p>\n

At this point it might be the best idea. We shouldn’t fight 2020 anymore. We try to fight back and it counters with a bigger blow. Maybe someone is trying to tell us something. Don’t mess with 2020 anymore. Just wash your hands of it. Call 2020 game over and let’s strap it up again in 2021. <\/p>\n

The motto is you get knocked down and get right back up and keep fighting. But at what point are we knocked out and the fight is over? At what point is 2020 declared the winner? Hey you win some, you lose some and go get the next one. Let’s go get 2021. <\/p>\n
