(Rosemead) – Rosemead turned the ball over six times including an interception with 33 seconds remaining in a 17-14 loss to Schurr Friday night. The Spartans spoiled the Panthers first game in their newly refurbished stadium. <\/p>\n\n\n

After Schurr was forced to punt Rosemead got the ball back with 1:06 left in the fourth quarter at the Schurr 42 yard line. After a five-yard run by Panther quarterback Damian Martinez, a late hit by the Spartans moved the ball down to the Schurr 28. But on the next play Martinez was picked off by Isaiah Candelaria to seal the deal for Schurr.  <\/p>\n

The Panthers also had the ball in Schurr territory on the previous possession at the Spartan 37 with 3:24 left but Dominick Baeza picked off Martinez to stop the threat. For Baeza it was his second interception of the night. <\/p>\n

The Panthers had three lost fumbles and the three interceptions for a total of six and in the end it proved to be costly <\/p>\n

Rosemead drove deep into Schurr territory on its first two possessions but came away empty. On their first drive the Panthers were stopped on fourth down on the Spartan 26. On the second one they coughed it up on the Schurr 20. <\/p>\n

After a scoreless first quarter the Panthers finally broke through early in the second. Jaydon Campbell capped a nine-play drive with an eight-yard run for a 7-0 lead. <\/p>\n

Schurr struck quickly a little over two minutes later when Matthew Salazar took a screen pass and turned it into a 51-yard catch and run for a touchdown. A two point conversion attempt failed. <\/p>\n

Baeza’s first pick set up Schurr’s next score. From the Rosemead 23 the Spartans needed just four plays to score. Candelaria hauled in a 15-yard pass from Anthony Garcia down to the Panther one. From there Garcia kept it and crossed the goal line for the touchdown. Candelaria ran in the two point conversion for a 14-7 lead with 1:02 left in the first half. The Spartans took that margin into the break. <\/p>\n

Rosemead fumbled on its first two possessions of the second half and was unable to get the offense going. Schurr was able to muster a 19-yard field goal for a 17-7 lead late in the third. <\/p>\n

Rosemead pieced together a 10-play, 65-yard scoring drive in the fourth quarter. Martinez found Campbell for 31 yards down to the Spartan three yard line. Two plays later Nick Ostry plunged in from the one and the Panthers were down by only three with 10:35 left in the fourth. <\/p>\n

Rosemead had its chances down the stretch only to be bitten by the turnover bug and fall short. <\/p>\n

Martinez had 18 carries for 132 yards rushing for Rosemead and passed for 86 yards but was hurt by the three interceptions. <\/p>\n

For Schurr Candelaria ran 22 times for 103 yards to lead the rushing attack. Schurr lost two fumbles as well but it didn’t hurt nearly as much as the Panther miscues. <\/p>\n

Schurr evened its record at 2-2 with the win while Rosemead fell to 1-3. <\/p>\n\n\n
