If not they might be battling for fourth. Arcadia is always in contention for a playoff spot which makes last year’s 2-7-1 record seem like such an aberration.

Injuries and a few bad breaks derailed last year’s Apache season but the outlook this year is bright.

Wednesday with a late afternoon sun beating down on Salter Field, the Apaches were out in full force. Arcadia isn’t in full pads yet but they did don the helmets.

“St. Francis is going to look exactly like this on game day,” yelled Coach Jon Dimalante as he led his team through drills. Arcadia opens the season at St. Frank’s on September 10.

Taylor Legace caught over 70 balls last year

Dimalante, a man of few words, is optimistic about the 2010 season. “I’m really proud of these kids. They’ve been working really hard,” he said. “It’s going to be a good season.”

Arcadia has reason to be upbeat. They have Myles Carr taking over at quarterback and Taylor Legace returning at receiver. Carr saw time last year at the position when he filled for the injured Garrett Tuck.

With Tuck now graduated Carr is the guy. Carr completed over 60 percent of his passes a year ago while throwing eight touchdowns. Legace had close to 900 yards in receptions on a remarkable 74 catches.

Rodney Arnett, only a junior will be the primary running back. Arnett averaged over eight yards per carry last year in limited time. David Maldonado will also be carrying the rock out of the backfield.

Coach Dimalante doing work; always optimistic

Keep an eye on tight end/DB A.J. Rail. Arcadia traditionally has solid lines and Kevin Martinez and Victor Wei look to carry that on.

After St. Francis, the Apaches travel to Monrovia and Temple City before opening league at Pasadena on October 1.
