{"id":8841,"date":"2010-09-04T09:33:30","date_gmt":"2010-09-04T16:33:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/midvalleysports.com\/?p=8841"},"modified":"2010-09-04T12:30:38","modified_gmt":"2010-09-04T19:30:38","slug":"tartans-take-advantage-of-turnovers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/midvalleysports.com\/?p=8841","title":{"rendered":"Tartans Take Advantage of Turnovers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(Azusa) \u2013Two-time Southeast Division Champion Charter Oak was given a rude welcome into the Inland Division as Glendora took advantage of four Charger turnovers to open the season with a 28-21 victory.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey (Tartans) played well,\u201d said Chargers Head Coach Lou Farrar.\u00a0 \u201cWe played really bad.\u00a0 You can\u2019t turn the ball over and expect to win.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Glendora running back Corey Victoria grounded out 87 yards on 19 carries including touchdown runs of two and five yards to end any question on who would be the starting back for the Tartans.<\/p>\n<p>Much-heralded senior quarterback Chad Jeffries kept the Charter Oak defense guessing as he went 10 of 16 on 111 yards and a touchdown. He added 18 carries and 69 yards rushing with a touchdown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCorey and Chad did a great job,\u201d said Glendora Head Coach Mark Pasquarella.\u00a0 \u201cCorey came in and got some tough yards.\u00a0 Chad just puts pressure on the defense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jefferies sealed the Tartans victory with a two-yard run up the middle.\u00a0 The scoring drive chewed up 6:24 on 11 plays that saw Glendora go 80-yards.<\/p>\n<p>After a scoreless\u00a0opening quarter, Travis Santiago (15 of 24 for 192 yards) hooked up with Dennis Rufus (four catches on 40 yards) on an innocent little screen play that turned into a 24-yard score to give the Chargers a 7-0 lead.<\/p>\n<p>The Tartans answered the score with Victoria\u2019s first touchdown of the night and Skyler Crall caused Santiago to fumble on the very next Charter Oak possession to give Glendora the ball back with 2:39 remaining in the half.<\/p>\n<p>Jefferies sent the Tartans to locker room with the lead on a controversial non-call with 10-seconds remaining in the half when he found Cory Murphy in the corner of the end zone.\u00a0 During the play Jeffries rolled to his left and started to tuck it and run when he saw Murphy open.\u00a0 It appeared from the Glendora sideline as though Jefferies had crossed the line of scrimmage by a good yard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChad looked like he was going to take it and run,\u201d said Pasquarella.\u00a0 \u201cHe stopped short and found Murphy in the end zone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Much of Charter Oak\u2019s success during its title runs the last two years was the ability to keep the opposing team\u2019s defense on the field in the second half.\u00a0 The Chargers were victims of their own medicine as the Tartans held possession of the football for 8:01 of the first 9:53 of the third quarter.<\/p>\n<p>That would be the difference in the game late as Glendora\u2019s offense \u00a0wore down the less experienced Charter Oak defense and Victoria took advantage of their lack of rest with his second touchdown on a five-yard run.<\/p>\n<p>The Chargers would strike back late in the fourth quarter to make things interesting, when up and coming freshman running back Kurt Scoby scored on a two-yard run with 2:21 to play in the game.<\/p>\n<p>CHARTER OAK\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 0 \u00a0\u00a07\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 14\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 21<\/p>\n<p>GLENDORA \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a00\u00a0 14\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 28<\/p>\n<p>1<sup>st<\/sup> Quarter \u2013 No Scoring<\/p>\n<p>2<sup>nd<\/sup> Quarter &#8211;\u00a0 8:48 Dennis Rufus 24 pass from Travis Santiago (Jack Schneider kick)<\/p>\n<p>3:04 Corey Victoria 2 run (Mogi Ghalambar kick)<\/p>\n<p>0:10\u00a0 Cory Murphy 17 pass from Chad Jeffries (Ghalambar kick)<\/p>\n<p>3<sup>rd<\/sup> Quarter &#8211;\u00a0\u00a0 2:07\u00a0 Victoria 5 run (Ghalambar kick)<\/p>\n<p>4<sup>th<\/sup> Quarter &#8211;\u00a0\u00a0 11:32\u00a0 Donald Martin 1 run\u00a0 (Schneider kick)<\/p>\n<p>5:08\u00a0\u00a0 Jeffries 2 run (Ghalambar kick)<\/p>\n<p>2:21\u00a0 Kurt Scoby 2 run (Schneider kick)<\/p>\n<p>Notes:\u00a0 Former Charter Oak players A.J.
