(Baldwin Park) — South Hills was\u00a0out of sync in the first half\u00a0but that\u00a0soon became a distant memory\u00a0as the Huskies\u00a0scored\u00a029 consecutive points en route to a 38-17 win over Baldwin Park\u00a0to open the season.<\/p>\n
Junior Huskies’ rusher Jamel Hart hit paydirt from 33 yards out to open the scoring. He had\u00a0109 yards on\u00a013 carries\u00a0before succumbing to cramps shortly into the second half.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Jordan Gutierrez\u00a0filled the void\u00a0as he led the\u00a0Huskies’ running attack with\u00a0bursts of 21, 23, and 78-yards on his first three carries.\u00a0He topped it off\u00a0by going 23 yards around left end for a score\u00a0to give\u00a0South Hills a 32-10 lead with\u00a07:11\u00a0to play.<\/p>\n
The senior, who does a little bit of everything, had\u00a0eight carries for\u00a0145 yards and a touchdown. He added\u00a053 yards on two receptions for a total of 198 yards on offense. He also booted a a 25 yard field goal\u00a055 seconds before halftime to begin the Huskies’ stampede.<\/p>\n
Baldwin Park\u00a0fell behind 9-0 early\u00a0before fighting back to take the lead 10-9 after quarterback\u00a0Mario\u00a0Rodriguez’s 19-yard pass\u00a0to Demetrius Jackson and a Jaime Toscano 25\u00a0yard field goal. Rodriguez went 16 of 23 for 130 yards and two TD’s – both to Jackson.<\/p>\n
During the\u00a0Huskies\u00a029 point run Vince Hernandez fired a pair of touchdown passes. He finished the night 9-14 for 142 yards and\u00a0two scores. \u00a0Both of those scores were to\u00a0tight end Josh Delagardelle from 30 and 7 yards out.<\/p>\n
South Hills linebacker Jacob Farias intercepted Rodriguez at midfield off a tip by Ralphie Bingochea and returned it 35 yards to the Braves’ 15. Three\u00a0plays later Bingochea put the game away\u00a0with a 16 yard scoring romp\u00a0with 5:00 to play.<\/p>\n
The Braves’ Rodriguez-Jackson connection ignited\u00a0again\u00a085 seconds later on an 11 yarder to close out the\u00a0scoring. Wardell Crutchfield III had a 28 yard reception and 9 carries for 33 yards\u00a0to complement the BP offense.<\/p>\n
