(Montebello) – Montebello scored three runs in the first inning and made them stand up in a 3-2 win over Alhambra Tuesday at Montebello High. <\/p>\n\n\n

With the victory the Oilers improved to 13-1 in the Almont League and are in sole possession of first place. Montebello is one game ahead of the Moors who dropped to 12-2 – both losses were at the hands of the Oilers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the first inning Nathan Ibarra led off with a single and Michael Rios laid down a bunt for a hit. A walk to Fernando Cruz loaded the bases and Manny Arana followed with a base hit to left to drive in two. Nathan Govea singled to score another run for a 3-0 lead. Alhambra escaped without giving up any more runs but the damage had been done. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Govea worked four scoreless innings for the Oliers before running into trouble in the fifth when the Moors pushed across two runs. Nero Navarro singled and Moses Llamas hit into a fielder’s choice to force Navarro at second. Marc Hernandez hit a ground ball that was booted by the shortstop putting runners on second and third. Llamas then scored on an errant pick-off attempt at third. Hernandez scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead to one. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Moors had golden opportunities in the sixth and seventh innings but failed to cash in. They had the bases loaded with one out in the sixth and two on in the seventh but couldn’t get a run home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Govea worked six innings for Montebello before giving way to Andrew Salazar who finished it off in the seventh. For the Moors Hernandez went three and two-thirds innings and Devin Martinez finished up and held the Oilers scoreless the rest of the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First place Montebello is now 17-7 overall while the Moors, in second, are 16-10. The two teams will face each other again Friday at Alhambra to finish up Almont League play. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
