When you start as a freshman or sophomore and never transfer, which is rare these days, you give off that vibe. A great freshman year and then a solid second year…then suddenly he’s entering his senior season. We look at the rosters for the upcoming season and think “Wow, he’s still there?”

Steven Comstock at Northview was an example of that. The first time I saw him was as a freshman in a summer passing league tournament. He started all four years at quarterback for the Vikings before going on to play for Fresno State. Same school, four-year starter, great high school career. He earned his stripes at Northview then went on to the next level. Seemed like he was there a long time but just four very solid seasons at the same school. That’s the way it should be but I digress.

Those three tournaments are in the books but there are two local tournaments coming up in the next two weeks as the passing circuit continues. The SGV Shootout at Arroyo, always a solid contingent of local teams, is this Saturday, followed by the Rumble at the Ranch at El Rancho on June 20.

Some quarterbacks to watch at the SGV Shootout: Arroyo’s Oscar Lopez, Baldwin Park’s Lequand “Jack Jack” Jackson, Schurr’s Jacob Torres and Muir’s Arthur Moreno. Torres led Schurr to the SGV Shootout title last year. At El Rancho Long, South El Monte’s Michael Maldonado and La Canada’s Joe Bell will all be slinging it.

San Dimas will be at the Shootout as well. It will be interesting to see the Saints throwing the ball around and using an offense that we will actually see this season. San Dimas, traditionally a ground and pound and Wing T (originally Wing Z) type offense is going in a completely different direction. New head coach Dylan O’Learly has abandoned that offense and will now be airing it out. Longtime San Dimas assistant and former player Dillon Corona has returned to the staff as offensive coordinator.

Another longtime assistant, South El Monte’s John Luque, who has been away from the sideline for several years, has returned to coaching and has joined West Covina’s staff.

A group called PA Sports put together a list of the Top 15 Head Coaches and Staff in the Southern Section, LA City and Ventura County areas. Carson Palmer- Santa Margarita, Raul Lara- Mater Dei and Jon Ellinghouse – Sierra Canyon went 1-2-3…of course. Interesting to note though, La Habra’s Frank Mazotta was 9th, St. Francis’ Lance Mitchell was 12th and Robert Maxie of Baldwin Park was 15th.

Great story last week about Arcadia’s Jonathan Maldonado, a 2022 graduate, returning to the school to make a donation to the football and basketball programs. He went on to play football at Nevada for four years and is now at Ole Miss. Ole Miss! I mean that’s big time! And he comes back to his alma mater to show his gratitude. How cool is that? And yet some people (commenters on the site) still don’t like it. And he’s an edge rusher. How can you not like an edge rusher? Don’t be bitter, be better.

With the news of another Pasadena transfer, sophomore RB/DB Synncere Pitts to St. Francis, rumors are rampant that the Bulldogs may not field a team this season. Marshall dropped football, Blair is still in 8-man and now Pasadena is possibly on the verge of dropping the program. Not a good look for the Pasadena School District. The Bulldogs won a CIF Championship in football just two years ago.

When it comes to high school football, the bloom is fading on the City of Roses.

That’s my principle.

Tim Peterson can be reached at tim.midvalleysports@gmail.com or on Twitter (X) @tspeterson40.
