I can also imagine him running over cornerbacks or them running away from him. Carter, who is 5’11” and about 214 pounds, looks like he just stepped off of the campus of LSU or Alabama or Georgia or Indiana or…insert school here…this kid is put together.

West Covina’s Jayden Carter is going to be a problem for opponents. (Photo by Duane Barker)

“I’ve never had a kid quite like this,” said former West Covina head coach Mike Maggiore. He may not look like a kid but he legitimately is. He had so many people questioning him on Twitter (X) the other day that he felt compelled to show a picture of his Identification Card. And there it was – CA ID DOB 04/2009.

Carter didn’t play last season and was at Rancho Cucamonga before personal circumstances dictated the move to West Covina.

West Covina can play Carter wherever they want. Linebacker, running back, safety…heck line him up wide, have him take a step back and hit him with a quick pass. Nobody will get in his way and 50 yards later he’ll be in the end zone. This kid is going to be a problem for defensive coordinators.

“I’m best at running back but I enjoy receiver a lot,” Carter said. Ok, there you go. I’m sure the Bulldogs can make that work.

Before they play him anywhere though the Bulldogs may want to do one other thing. Build a wall around West Covina High School and have security check points at every entrance. Any coaches from other schools should be strictly prohibited from entering the premises. There have already been other schools in his ear. Don’t let the kid out of your sight.

**

The reports of Muir’s demise have been greatly exaggerated. I received multiple messages that several players left the program after the recent coaching change. It can’t be true. And if it is true then the Mustangs had a wealth of talent in their program that was just waiting in the wings. Muir, behind quarterback Arthur Moreno, rolled to the SGV Shootout championship Saturday beating Baldwin Park 18-0 in the Final.

While Moreno was making the throws guys like Noah Bozeman, Deveon Blaylock, James Taylor, Drew Long, Demarion Blaylock and Marquise Garrett were all making plays. Deveon Blaylock, Taylor and Long are all seniors while the rest are underclassmen. The Mustangs could make a run.

Mustangs Note: Muir is in the process of refurbishing its football stadium. It is still be determined as to where the home games will be played this season.

**

It was fitting that the Stangs matched up with Baldwin Park. The Braves, (Yes, they’re still the Braves) are loaded too. We already know about quarterback Lequand “Jack Jack” Jackson and running backs Jacory Coleman and Choyce Hampton but also keep an eye on junior athlete Rondell Gildon, 6’2″ 175. He gets after it on defense and will be force offensively as well. Not an easy matchup for cornerbacks.

“He’s long, competitive and has great ball skills. Bright future ahead,” said Baldwin Park head coach Robert Maxie.

Baldwin Park’s Rondell Gildon. “Long, competitive, great ball skills, bright future ahead.”

**

Longtime area assistant Mike Minter (Monrovia, Rio Hondo Prep, Bosco Tech, Maranatha) and I know I’m missing somebody, is on Chris Williams staff at Covina now. Minter has a ton of experience and brings a wealth of knowledge to the game. Nice addition for Williams.

**

Ran into Rand Holdren, who has taken over as head coach at Village Christian, at the Shootout. It was a little weird seeing him in the red colors of Village Christian and he was a little concerned about his numbers but it will work out. He’s got a quarterback who can sling it.

**

Another quick hit on West Covina. Not only has longtime South El Monte assistant John Luque joined the staff but former Bell Gardens head coach Hector Novoa is also on board. Kabba, the second-year head coach, is getting all the pieces in place.

Carter, the kid who is already being asked for ID, may be the most important piece of all.

That’s my principle.

Tim can be reached at tim.midvalleysports@gmail.com or on Twitter (X) @tspeterson40.
