The A’s were swept for the tenth time this season, losing the final three road games to the Cleveland Guardians. They scored five first inning runs over the first two games, but the Athletics couldn’t hold either lead.<\/p>\n
Pitcher Jack Perkins turned in his second consecutive “quality-start”, but the A’s bats gave him no support, and they were shut out in the finale, 1-0.<\/p>\n
With the loss, the Athletics went 0-6 on the road, after also being swept by the Rays in St. Petersburg earlier in the week.<\/p>\n
(Guardians: 5-3)
\nThe Athletics started the series off strong Friday night with three first inning runs, when after a pair of walks by Henry Bolte and Lawrence Butler Zack Gelof hit his 19th home run of the season.<\/p>\n
After a (1-for-11, .090) series at the plate against the Rays, Bolte’s 103.8 bomb snapped him out of his mini-slump and gave the Athletics an early 3-0 lead.<\/p>\n
Reliever Mason Barnett started for the A’s and loaded the bases in both the first and second innings but managed to avoid giving up any runs. The Guardians tied it 3-3 in the fourth inning after Bryan Roccio’s RBI double scored two runs, and a Jose Ramirez RBI single scored Roccio from second base.<\/p>\n
Reliever Scott Blewett (L 2-1, 7.16) allowed a Travis Bazzana 411-foot home run in the fifth inning to give up the lead and take the loss, while Ramirez later homered off reliever Seth Johnson to make it 5-3.<\/p>\n
The Athletics managed just two hits after the Gelof home run in the first.<\/p>\n
(Guardians: 12-6)
\nAgain on Saturday, the A’s started strong with four consecutive first inning singles and scored two runs on RBI singles by Zack Gelof and Donovan Walton.<\/p>\n
Athletics starter Jacob Lopez (L 6-5, 5.68) was absolutely shelled in this game and was down 5-2 before he recorded his first out.<\/p>\n
Chase Delauter hit a three-run blast, followed two batters later by Angel Martinez’ first of two home runs on the day, and Cleveland had a 5-2 lead. Walton’s second RBI single of the game in the third inning closed the game to 5-3, before Kotsay did the unthinkable in the bottom half of the inning.<\/p>\n
The A’s manager left Lopez in, and he allowed four consecutive doubles and ten total earned runs by the time Kotsay took over, ending his day.<\/p>\n
Angel Martinez’s second homer then increased the lead to 11-4, before Walton hit a two-run bomb in the fifth inning, to bring the A’s to within 11-6.<\/p>\n
Another bad Kotsay decision in this blowout loss was when he pulled Walton in the seventh inning for pinch-hitter Tommy White.<\/p>\n
At the time, a third of the game remained, and Walton was 3-for-3 with a home run, four RBIs, and a stolen base.<\/p>\n
WHO DOES THAT?! Kotsay left a dead-in-the-water starter in for “10” earned runs, but pulled a hitter dialed in, who was having a career-type day.<\/p>\n
UNCONSCIONABLE!!
\nAnother Angel Martinez RBI single made it a 12-6 loss for the Athletics, but Kotsay damaged his own squad with his erratic decisions, AGAIN!<\/p>\n
(Guardians: 1-0)
\nIn this fine pitching duel, Guardians Gavin Williams threw seven innings of shutout baseball, while A’s starter Jack Perkins gave up just one run on five hits over six innings, and Cleveland outlasted the A’s 1-0.
\nThe only run came on a Jo Adell RBI single that scored Jose Ramirez from third base after he doubled to open the fourth inning.<\/p>\n
Perkins (L 3-12, 5.90) pitched four 1-2-3 innings, but the lack of run support continued from his last outing. He has allowed just one run in the last 12 2\/3 innings pitched over two starts, and his team’s bats have produced just one run of support.<\/p>\n
Gelof went 2-for-4 for the Athletics in the loss.<\/p>\n
