(San Gabriel) \u2013 After falling behind early in its first game, Muir rattled off 37-unanswered points to defeat San Gabriel 40-23.<\/p>\n

Although the Mustangs managed to produce quick strike scores throughout the game, it was the 17 penalties that will not sit well with head coach Ken Howard.<\/p>\n

After spotting the Matadors an early score, Muir\u2019s star tandem of Tairen Owens and Kevon Seymour put on a show in the second quarter with fast scoring drives to put the game out of reach before the second half even began.<\/p>\n

Owens finished the night quietly amassing 118-all purpose yards and two scores (one rushing and one receiving). Seymour caught four passes for 74 yards and a touchdown.<\/p>\n

Trailing 7-6 early in the second quarter, the Mustangs took lead for good on Owens\u2019s 6-yard run.<\/p>\n

The ensuing San Gabriel drive ended with Tyquwan Glass\u2019s first of two interceptions on the night. Three plays later, Owens took an innocent screen from Joshua Mumea-Washington and turned it into a 61-yard touchdown reception as he missed five Matador defenders.<\/p>\n

The Mustangs scored two minutes later to extend the lead to 25-7 on Darick Holmes second touchdown of the evening.<\/p>\n

Seymour registered his first touchdown at the 4:47 mark of the second quarter on a 52-yard reception with much of the yardage coming after the catch as San Gabriel failed to tackle the speedy wide receiver. He would close the scoring in the second quarter three minutes later with a dazzling 59-yard punt return to send Muir into the locker room with a 26 point lead.<\/p>\n

San Gabriel managed to show some life at the beginning of the second half, as the defense caused a fumble that was recovered by a Matador player. Seven plays later with Eric Alvarez leading the offense, San Gabriel found the end zone as Joseph Mayorga sliced through the Mustang defense for a 19-yard score.<\/p>\n

After holding Muir on its subsequent possession, the Matadors drove right back down the field with Alvarez finding Alex Villalobos on a slant pass to cut the lead to 17 with 6:03 remaining.<\/p>\n

Muema-Washington put any thoughts of a dream comeback to rest when he plunged from one-yard out with 1:33 remaining in the third quarter.<\/p>\n

The bright spots for the Matadors were Alvarez and Villalobos. Alvarez passed for 72 yards on 7 of 15 with a touchdown. Villalobos led all receivers with 10 receptions and 98 yards with a touchdown.<\/p>\n
