{"id":18656,"date":"2011-09-30T23:17:40","date_gmt":"2011-10-01T06:17:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/midvalleysports.com\/?p=18656"},"modified":"2011-10-01T10:12:01","modified_gmt":"2011-10-01T17:12:01","slug":"walnut-31-los-altos-14","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/midvalleysports.com\/?p=18656","title":{"rendered":"Enough is Enough for Walnut"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_18718\" style=\"width: 289px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/midvalleysports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Walnut-looks-to-score-again-in-the-4th-quarter.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18718\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-18718\" title=\"Walnut looks to score again in the 4th quarter\" src=\"http:\/\/midvalleysports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Walnut-looks-to-score-again-in-the-4th-quarter-279x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"279\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-18718\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Walnut rose to the occasion at home against Los Altos.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>By Matthew Schuler<\/p>\n<p>(Walnut)- Going into yesterday\u2019s Hacienda League match-up, the odds were looking favorable for an undefeated Los Altos (4-0) team to roll over a winless Walnut (0-4) squad.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Someone must have forgot to mention that to the Mustangs.<\/p>\n<p>After four consecutive losses in pre-league match-ups, winless Walnut took out its frustrations on Los Altos, defeating the Conquerors 34-14 to notch their first win of the season in front of a ecstatic home crowed at Ken Gunn stadium.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe other four games we just didn\u2019t play to our potential,\u201d said Walnut coach Michael O\u2019Shields. \u201cThe kids put it together tonight and\u2026. at the right time, when it mattered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not only did they get it together, but they also made a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Devin Brown rushed for 130 yards, Chris Mendez finished with 120 total, and the Mustang defense shut out the conquerors in the first three quarters of play, jumping out to a 17-0 lead going into the fourth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe played four quarters,\u201d said O\u2019Shields. \u201cThat\u2019s the big thing, that\u2019s what we\u2019ve been talking to the kids about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Los Altos quarterback Shane Virnala accounted for both of the Conquerors scores and added 152 yards total. Virnala connected with Andy Sotello on six pass plays for 60 yards.<\/p>\n<p>The strong defensive effort for Walnut finally surfaced after giving up a total of 147 points in its first four losses.
